San Francisco Giants (Rueter) at Florida Marlins (Redman) 4:05 pm EST

    Florida - Redman -115 (3 Units)

Starters: Mark Redman comes into this game with a 6-4 record at home with a very solid 2.88 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. He has never faced the Giants and he has only pitched against one current Giant, Eric Young, who is 2-10 in his career. As was the case with Kerry Wood on Tuesday with his limited prior innings against Atlanta, Redman has a big advantage as none of the Giants have faced off against him. The Giants will counter with Kirk Rueter, who has not had a good year compared to past seasons. He comes in with a 10-5 record but along with that is a 4.53 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. Opposing hitters are batting .297 against him. On the road, his numbers deteriorate even more with a 5.10 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and .320 BAA. He is 4-6 with a 5.77 ERA against the Marlins in his career.

Bullpen: The Marlins were very impressive in Game 2 with their bullpen. After San Francisco scored a run off Rick Helling in the fifth, Carl Pavano shut the door on that uprising and Chad Fox, Dontrelle Willis, Braden Looper and Ugueth Urbina shut down the Giants after that. Pavano came on in the bottom of the fifth and escaped from a bases-loaded, one-out jam on a pair of popups with the Marlins trailing by a run. Fox came on to ring up the Giants with back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh. Then, in the eighth, it was Looper's turn. He got two quick outs after the Giants had put two on with one down. Ugueth Urbina closed it out with a perfect ninth. Meanwhile, the Marlins' offense jumped all over the Giants' bullpen to the tune of five runs on eight hits, including three by leadoff man Juan Pierre, who finished 4-for-5 on the day.

Offense: Florida broke out with 9 runs on 15 hits in Game 2 and while they are only hitting .236 in the series, the Giants are only hitting .180. All of the talk was about Schmidt in his Game 1 masterpiece, but hidden in that was the fact the Giants managed only 3 hits. Both teams hit lefties well, with Florida hitting .290 and the Giants hitting .296. San Francisco is only hitting .265 on the road while the Marlins are at .278 at home. Current Marlins have lit up Rueter with a .380 average (46-141).

Other: The momentum is clearly in the Marlins corner right now. After falling behind 4-1 on Wednesday, they didn’t back down and rallied for the big win. "That's what we needed here," catcher Ivan Rodriguez said. "At least win one here and then go home and play two over there. We have some pretty good momentum right now with the win and we look forward to playing in Florida." Pro Player Stadium will be a madhouse on Friday as nearly 53,000 tickets have already been sold. After walk up sales, they are expecting closer to 60,000. The Marlins averaged 16,290 during the regular season, but did not draw a crowd of under 25,000 for their final six home contests. Florida has excelled at home with a 53-28 record including winning 9 of their last 11 and 27 of their last 34. Florida will play aggressive again and with their success against Rueter, they should go up 2-1 in the series.
