Florida Marlins (Penny) at San Francisco Giants (Ponson) 4:05 pm EST

    Florida - Penny +150 (3 units)

Starters: Brad Penny finished the season very strong for Florida with only 2 losses over the final two months of the season. The Marlins went 8-3 +4.5 in his last 11 starts and Penny finished with a 2.08 road ERA in September. He faced the Giants once this season, going 7 innings and allowing 3 runs in the no-decision. Sidney Ponson has not been as fortunate since coming over from the Orioles in August. He was 3-6 in his 10 starts with the giants losing his no-decision. He is currently on a 4-game losing streak with a 5.63 ERA. San Francisco is 1-4 -7.5 in his home starts but one of those wins did come against Florida.

Bullpen: Neither bullpen was a factor in San Francisco’s Game 1 2-0 victory on Tuesday. Chad Fox threw one inning on Tuesday and he has been their best middle guy with a 2.13 ERA on the season. Closer and setup man Ugueth Urbina and Branden Looper form a very potent 1-2 punch. Tim Worrell filled in very well for Robb Nen in the closer role. The middle guys are all solid for the Giants and finished September very strong. We’re hoping the Marlins get to Ponson early and often to avoid seeing this tough group late.

Offense: Both teams have hit righties about the same .258-.257 but the Marlins have the advantage over the head-to-head matchup. Florida starters are 14-56 (.250) against Ponson while San Francisco starters are 12-60 (.200) against Penny. Not a huge difference but with the recent troubles of Ponson, the Marlins can take advantage early.

Other: The Marlins were simply outpitched in Game 1 as Jason Schmidt showed why he is this year’s Cy Young winner. They now go against a big class dropoff in Ponson who simply has not done what he was supposed to do when coming over from Baltimore. Once the Marlins get their hits, they are dangerous. They are a young, aggressive team with plenty of speed to burn on the base paths. Juan Pierre led MLB with 65 stolen bases and Derrek Lee and Luis Castillo each had 21, while Juan Encarnacion chipped in 19. Expect a different game from them on Wednesday. The starters made the difference in Game 1 and we also think they do in Game 2.
