FRESNO STATE +9 over Oregon State

The Fresno State Bulldogs kick off their 2003 home schedule on Friday night when the Oregon State Beavers pay a visit to Bulldog Stadium. Last Saturday, Fresno was on the road in Knoxville, pitted against the then 12th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers. The 24-6 loss was certainly less than what the Bulldogs had expected, having topped several BCS teams in recent years, with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets being the latest victim in last season's Silicon Valley Bowl.

As for the Beavers, they took the easy road to gaining a win on Thursday night, beating up on the Sacramento State Hornets at home, 40-7. It was the first time the I-AA Hornets had ever played against a Pac-10 squad, and it certainly showed as Oregon State head coach Mike Riley picked up his first win in his second tour of duty with the school.

There is little question that Oregon State has an explosive offense. Quarterback Derek Anderson is back for another tour of duty, as is Heisman hopeful RB Steven Jackson. The Beavers also have good talent at the WR positions when they go down field. The OSU defense should be rock solid again, as they led the Pac-10 against the pass last year, while the rush defense was also tremendous a season ago, limited opposing teams to less than 100 yards per game.

The Fresno State offense struggled mightily in the opener versus Tennessee last weekend; however, most teams would not have fared much better in the stifling atmosphere in Knoxville against a fired-up Vols' team. Starting quarterback Paul Pinegar was forced to the sidelines with an injury, leaving Jeff Grady to make the calls under center. Grady did not look good; however, he endured constant pressure from the "Rocky Top" defense all afternoon. None of the Bulldog offensive weapons were able to get on track, but we look for that to be a different story here. They simply have too much talent at the skill positions to be kept down for long. The always-dangerous Bernard Berrian is back at WR and returning kicks. The Davis brothers, Marque (WR) and Rodney (RB) are other key players who will need to have big games for the Bulldogs here. The defense didn't play too poorly last week, considering they were on the field all afternoon. Giving up just 24 points to a talented Tennessee offense is nothing to be ashamed of.

As far as the series between these two schools is concerned, we are witnessing the growth of a bitter rivalry. Fresno State is a perfect 5-0 SU all-time at home against the Beavers; however, the most recent contest went to OSU rather easily in 2002, by a score of 59-19 in Corvallis. The Fresno players certainly have not forgot that whipping or possibly the most popular cheap shot in OSU history when a Beaver leveled Fresno State punt returner Adam Jennings -- payback for Kendall Edwards' hit on Terrell Roberts the year before. The Bulldogs' head coach, Pat Hill is known for his hard-hitting teams and he's looking for his team to explode against OSU. He banned interviews with players after Wednesday's practice saying, "Any talking they want to do they can do with their shoulder pads and their helmets on Friday night".

Fresno State will certainly enjoy a big advantage: the home crowd at Bulldog Stadium. The crowd noise and jeering fans have turned the stadium into one of the West Coast's least-favorite destinations for visiting teams. Hill's home record speaks for itself. The Bulldogs haven't lost a non-conference home game in five years, and are a perfect 7-0 ATS as a home underdog. In fact, under Hill, the team has won all 5 games SU as a home dog under his watch. Other numbers indicate what a graveyard Bulldog stadium is for visitors. Fresno is 7-1 ATS vs. winning teams, 11-2 ATS as an overall dog vs. non-conference opponents, 9-2 ATS as a dog off a SU loss, and 6-0 ATS at home vs. all Pac-10 ballclubs.

As good of team as the Beavers appear to be, they are in a very tough spot here. They are a poor 1-8 ATS as a road favorite, 0-5 ATS as a road fave vs. non-conference opponents off a SU loss, and just 3-8 ATS on natural grass. They will run into a completely different Bulldog bunch here in what we expect to be a very close and entertaining game. Asking the Beavers to win by double-digits in a stadium they are 0-5 SU lifetime in and where the coach has been unbeatable as a home dog is a bit much. In fact, we give FSU a decent shot at winning this game SU as they cover the spread.

1 STAR SELECTION (3.5% of Bankroll)

    NORTHWESTERN +8 over Air Force

Two teams off opening day wins, meet up in Evanston as Northwestern hosts Air Force at Ryan Field. Last week, the Falcons had no trouble in shutting out the Wofford Terriers at home by a final of 49-0. The Wildcats had a bit of a tougher time but they were on the road against a Division 1 team, as they handled the Jayhawks 28-20. Last year, the Falcons blew out Northwestern by a final of 52-3 in their home opener. Now, the Wildcats are looking for revenge in their home lid-lifter.

Air Force will see an entirely different Northwestern team this time around. Forced to play through a steady stream of rain last week, the Wildcats put their faith in running back Jason Wright and were not disappointed. The Player of the Week in the Big Ten, Wright gained a career-tying high of 196 yards on the ground and found his way to the end zone four times, accounting for all but the PATs for Northwestern on the day. Normally this Wildcat team will operate from the shotgun and put the ball in the air more often than not. Having a true running threat will only make the offense more dangerous and unpredictable. Their QB Basanez was second in the league in total offense last year with 230 ypg, just fractions of a yard behind Iowa's Brad Banks. The run defense was the worst in Division I-A last year; however, they return most of their starters, including one huge addition. MLB Pat Durr, the heart of the Wildcats defense was injured and lost for the season in last year's encounter with the Falcons. If Durr can disrupt the Falcon Flexbone — as he has promised to do — the Wildcats should be able to slow down the Air Force ground game enough to give the offense a chance to keep this one close all the way.

Quarterback Chance Harridge runs the show for the Air Force offense and does so very well. He's just the second player in NCAA history to both run and pass for 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. Air Force has finished in the top 10 in rushing every year and is right on track to do it again in 2003. The Falcons are sound on defense but they will be tested by a Northwestern team that is very dangerous offensively and can score quickly. Additionally, the Air Force defensive line averages just 262 pounds, will have to face one of college football's biggest offensive front, as the Wildcats average 317 a man.

Northwestern will have the homefield advantage as well here. This Wildcat team is a year older, and much better. The importance of the return of linebacker Pat Durr to the NU defense can't be minimized. Look for the Wildcats to make great use of their possessions and try to wear Air Force down over the course of the game. Getting on top early and making Air Force play catch-up is what Northwestern will aim to do here, as the Falcons are not a passing team whatsoever. The points should be a-plenty here, but with the opening-day home crowd and revenge factor in their favor, we like the Wildcats to keep this one close and pull off the minor upset.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: NORTHWESTERN 35 AIR FORCE 34
