Tulane Green Wave +6.5 (3 Units)
Texas Christian is the team to beat. The defending co-champion Horned Frogs, who finished last season 10-2 and ranked #22 in the nation, have six players back from the conference's No. 1 defense, including three of the front four. On offense, the Horned Frogs have a pair of marquee players in running back Lonta Hobbs and quarterback Tye Gunn. Gunn started only four games before suffering a season-ending knee injury, but TCU averaged 40.5 points in those four games. Unfortunately for TCU, Gunn will see limited action on Monday because of his knee problem so expect a lot from Hobbs and backup Ricky Madison. Add to that, all 3 pass catchers must be replaced as well. The Tulane defense returns only 3 starters and 2 of those are hurt for this game as linebackers Wesley Heath is listed as doubtful and Anthony Cannon is listed as questionable. Even with this being the case, defensive coordinator Eric Schumann should have this group ready. In his second year at Tulane, Schumann has already made huge strides. He improved their defense by nearly 20 ppg and 120 ypg from 2001. Tulane will arguably have the top offense in Conference USA as they return 9 players from 2002. Led by QB JP Losman, RB Mewelde Moore and WR Roydell Williams, this will be a very potent attack but they will have a tough test against the TCU defense. As a first-time starter last year, Losman was inconsistent while dealing with a young offensive line and receiving corps. Almost the entire Tulane offense is back in 2003. In their meeting last season won by TCU 17-10, Losman was only 8-29 before being replaced in the 3rd quarter and Moore only carried the ball 10 times for 15 yards. This year, Losman will have Williams back and a much more experienced offensive line for his protection and to open holes for Moore. Losman remembers that TCU game well and said the offensive line took the beating personally. "I think that game was a big eye-opener for those guys," Losman said. "I don't know if we ever let that game go, especially the linemen." The players haven't, and neither has offensive line coach Don Mahoney, who has used the game film to motivate his players and correct mistakes. "For them, that game never left their minds," Mahoney said. "It's been with them throughout the offseason and throughout the summer. As we get into game preparation, watching that film was one of the first things we watched." Tulane head coach Chris Scelfo reiterated that the offensive line would be the key. "I think our offensive line is going to have to improve tremendously. The quarterback and the running back and the receivers are going to get a lot of the credit and a lot of the blame, but the whole key is how our offensive line performs." TCU lost 5 starts on defense, and 3 of those are from the secondary, and that could be a problem against Losman. The Green Wave have some extra motivation tonight as they were completely shut down last season at TCU even though they only lost by 7 points. There should be a lot of energy in the Superdome for this rare nationally televised night game as talk is high down in New Orleans, increasing season ticket sales by 10,000 this season. This game should be decided by a field goal either way.
