Florida Marlins at Atlanta Braves 7:35 PM ET
Florida Marlins (Willis) -104
The Braves were shut out by Washington on Thursday as they managed only two hits and now must face the best pitcher they have seen to date. Dontrelle Willis has looked sharp in his first two outings this season and April has been his time to shine. He is now 11-1 with a 2.40 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 17 career starts in April. Atlanta has been his biggest nemesis in the division as he is just 4-4 in his career against the Braves but he is 2-1 in five career starts at Turner Field with the Marlins winning three of those five games.
Atlanta turns to Mark Redman who is coming off a horrible performance in his opener against the Mets. He looked good to start out but he couldn’t get out of the sixth inning as he allowed five runs on nine hits and a walk in 5.2 innings of work. He is now 8-13 with a 4.17 ERA in 30 career starts in April. This includes a 0-3 record and a 7.85 ERA over the last two seasons. Last season it took the Royals to win eight starts to pick up a win and while the Braves are no Kansas City, it will be tough for them as long as he pitches the way he does.
Florida is hitting .338 against left-handed pitching on the season and after scoring two runs in each of its last two games, the offense is ready to bust out. Atlanta has allowed three runs or less in five straight games but we cannot forget the last three came against the Nationals. The Braves meanwhile are struggling against lefties, hitting only .222 on the season and their .226 batting average is second worst in the National League. Florida leads the league with a .290 average while also topping the league with a .514 slugging percentage.
The recent success of the Braves pitching looks tough to go against but it sets up a great situation. Play against all National League teams when the money line is +125 to -125 with a team batting average of .245 or worse on the season, after allowing three runs or less four straight games. This situation is 29-10 against the money line (74.4 percent) since 1997 with the average run differential being +1.1 rpg. The streak of the Braves began right after the Mets scored 11 runs in Redman’s last start so it’s back to that on Friday. Play Florida Marlins 1 Unit
