New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins 7:05 PM ET

    Over 10.5 New York Yankees/Minnesota Twins -117

The starting pitching in New York has been atrocious for the Yankees as not one starter has made it past the 5th inning while the unit has posted a dismal 9.97 ERA on the season. Carl Pavano takes his second turn on Monday and it’s pretty sad to think that his first start was the best of the bunch. He allowed five runs, four earned, in 4.1 innings of work and he is still trying to recover from a plethora of injuries. He spent the last 21 months battling rotator-cuff tendinitis, back problems, elbow surgery and the effects of a car accident.

Sidney Ponson, who was 4-5 combined last season with the Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals, has faced the Bronx Bombers 27 times with 26 of those appearances being starts, and is just 6-12 with a 4.63 ERA. Ponson was released by the Yankees after just five games and a 10.47 ERA. He had a decent spring but he has been pushed back in the rotation and has not faced live hitting in well over a week. The Twins took a chance and hope it pays off but going up against his former team and one of the best lineups in the league will be a challenge.

The Twins have a team ERA of 2.45 with the starters posting a 2.61 ERA but two of the five games have been started by Johan Santana so it’s a little skewed. Both bullpens have been pitching well but the New York pen is certainly tired after the first week while the Minnesota pen might be entering this game when it’s already too late. New York is averaging 6.6 rpg through the first week of the season while the Twins averaged 5.7 rpg in their first home series this year against Baltimore

The Yankees offense could not pull it out against the Orioles on Sunday but the bats tend to come alive following a loss. The Yankees are 44-25 over after a loss over the last two seasons and also over the last two seasons, New York is 26-13 over in road games when playing against a team with a winning record. As mentioned, it won’t be easy for Ponson going up against a tough lineup. He has struggled in the past with his teams going 22-6 over against teams that are averaging 6.2 or more rpg on the season since 1997. Play Over New York Yankees/Minnesota Twins 1.5 Units
