    Thursday's clients-only Selection

Oakland vs. SAN FRANCISCO UNDER 37 1/2

Bay area rivals meet in the preseason Thursday night, as the Oakland Raiders take the short trip across the Bay Bridge to play the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park. Oakland began its preseason slate with a narrow 7-6 win over the St. Louis Rams at the Coliseum. It was billed as an offensive showdown, but turned into a war of attrition. New San Francisco coach Dennis Erickson and the 49ers came out the gate quickly with a 24-6 win over the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. The Niners were without starting quarterback Jeff Garcia but still got fine play behind center. Ken Dorsey tossed two touchdown passes and Tim Rattay added one in the victory for San Francisco.

Raiders head coach Bill Callahan made it clear that he wants to see sustained drives Thursday night. At the skill positions, at least, they will try to get that done without many more opportunities than they had against St. Louis. That group - quarterback Rich Gannon; wide receivers Jerry Rice, Jerry Porter and Tim Brown; and running back Charlie Garner - played two series Friday. Callahan said they might get three against the 49ers, with the exception of Garner who will likely be held out because of a sore knee.

While we do expect a more concerted effort from Oakland we certainly aren't looking for an offensive explosion. Gannon is trying to regain his pre-Super Bowl form, but his confidence was no doubt shaken. He's still trying to rebuild it and hasn't been sharp in camp. Following Gannon in the Raiders QB rotation will be Marques Tuiasosopo, Rick Mirer, and Tee Martin. No Oakland QB distinguished himself against the Rams. Tee Martin struggled to find his rhythm and didn't make much of anything happen during his quarter and a half of action. He completed only 1 of 6 passes and netted 10 yards on five rushes.

While the Raiders offense didn't show up last week, the defense certainly did. We look for a strong showing again here against the Niner reserve QBs. If Oakland could keep Kurt Warner, Marc Bulger, and company in check, they should do an equally fine job here. On a short week, the 49ers will have a hard time turning around for this game, while Oakland should be the fresher squad so we don't expect San Francisco to have nearly as much success against Oakland as they enjoyed in KC.

We would give a very slight edge to the Raiders against the spread but not strong enough to make it a selection. We expect a low-scoring game coming down to a late field goal, so we rate the side a near toss-up. In looking at the TOTAL for the contest we do like the UNDER here. These teams have played 3 times in the last 4 pre-seasons with each game going UNDER. Incredibly, the Raiders have gone UNDER the total in 10 of their last 11 exhibition road games and we look for a similar outcome here.

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: SAN FRANCISCO 14 OAKLAND 10

Carolina +3 1/2 over NY GIANTS

Carolina vs. NY GIANTS UNDER 35

The New York Giants will take the field for their preseason home opener Friday night, when they take on the Carolina Panthers and former Giants defensive coordinator John Fox at Giants Stadium. New York had a forgettable opener, dropping a 26-6 decision to the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium last Thursday. Meanwhile, Carolina began its preseason with an impressive 20-0 blanking of the Washington Redskins at Ericsson Stadium.

Fox did a nice job to get the Panthers to a 7-9 record last season and it appears the team has simply gotten better, especially in the rushing department. Ex-Redskin Stephen Davis rushed for 74 yards against his former team in last Saturday's win. Skip Hicks and Rod Smart also saw time in the backfield for Carolina, each posting a rushing touchdown. This week they may add Deshaun Foster into the mix for a very deep RB rotation. As for the quarterbacks, Fox was pleased with the play of all four of his quarterbacks the victory over Washington as they completed 16 of 30 passes for 169 yards. Chris Weinke, No. 3 on the depth chart, was the most impressive statistically, completing 8 of 11 passes for 69 yards, and was on the field for the Panthers' two touchdown drives. We look for the QB rotation to remain the same for this contest, but with the starters playing longer than just one quarter.

New York will counter with Kerry Collins (first half), Jessie Palmer (3rd Q), and Jason Garrett (4th Q). Ryan Van Dyke may see some mop up time as well. One major problem for the Giants is their offensive line which was just plain offensive against New England, allowing 7 sacks. Now they'll be facing the fierce front line of the Panthers so matters may not improve for the G-men signal callers. New York also has the distraction of Jeremy Shockey's derogatory comments directed towards ex-Giant coach Bill Parcells that they've had to deal with all week.

Carolina figures to be the more focused team here. John Fox is especially looking forward to it, as he'll be returning to face some old friends. He would love nothing more than to beat his old boss, Jim Fassell. Additionally, we note that the New Yorkers are an awful 1-11 ATS as preseason home favorites, and 4-13 ATS in their last 17 home preseason games overall. Carolina is a solid 6-1 ATS versus conference opponents in the preseason. Finally, pre-season underdogs off a shutout victory are a 70% winning proposition. Look for another fine defensive performance here from the Panthers as we expect them to pull out a late SU victory in a low-scoring contest.
