We had our second winner of the early pre-season on Monday...

Kansas City -1 over Green Bay

The annual Hall of Fame game in football's birthplace of Canton, Ohio will feature a rematch of Super Bowl I on Monday night, when the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers face off in the midst of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's 40th Anniversary celebration.

Kansas City would love to return to its golden days, as it missed the playoffs for the fifth straight season in 2002. The Chiefs finished with an 8-8 mark, tying San Diego for last in the AFC West. Kansas City lost two of its last three contests to miss out on the wild card. It didn't help that All-Pro running back Priest Holmes sat out the final few weeks of the season with a hip injury. Holmes, who underwent hip surgery in the off-season, HAS

Green Bay comes into this contest off a home wild card game loss to Atlanta last season. The Packers finished in a three-way tie for the best record in the NFC (12-4) with Philadelphia and eventual Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay, and won the NFC North. Green Bay then fell apart and dropped a 27-7 decision at Lambeau Field to Michael Vick and the Falcons in the opening round of the postseason. The good news for Packer Backers is that Pro Bowl and future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre chose to forego retirement and return for another season.

This meeting will feature a team just trying to survive the pre-season (Green Bay) vs. an opponent looking to make great strides in these exhibition games. Head coach Mike Sherman said there are quite a few players who won’t play at least until the second preseason game Aug. 9 at Atlanta. Minus four starters on offense, the Packers will reluctantly start Brett Favre at QB but won't play him long. Look for #4 to go 10, maybe a dozen plays. They will not do anything to expose him to a big hit, especially since neither left tackle Chad Clifton nor right tackle Mark Tauscher will play in their comebacks from major injuries. Former Dolphin Marcus Spriggs will replace Clifton and second-year man Kevin Barry will replace Tauscher. Barry certainly has had his share of problems in the first two weeks of training camp. Last Monday he stubbed his toe rather badly during a modified intrasquad scrimmage at Lambeau Field and he didn't even come close to blocking Packers DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila. Another reason for Favre to see very limited action is that he's had to rest a sore throwing shoulder, so Green Bay is handling him with extra care as he prepares for his 13th NFL season.

Favre will be relieved by veteran Doug Pederson, but Pederson will get only a short stint, too, as Sherman wants to give second-year pro Craig Nall and free agent Akili Smith the brunt of the playing time at quarterback against the Chiefs. Nall is expected to enter the game before the end of the first half and will split the second half with Smith. Pederson may not be especially sharp either as he has seen little action thus far in camp.

Meanwhile, starting wide receivers Donald Driver (hamstring) and Robert Ferguson (tailbone) also will not play. Green Bay's lack of depth at the position undoubtedly will show by the second quarter, when rookies Carl Ford and Antonio Chatman take the field. Free agents Kamau Peterson and Brian McDonald are the third pair, with unimpressive seventh-round draft choice DeAndrew Rubin and newcomer Rob Johnson finishing up. As if those weren't enough offensive woes for the Packers, five of their 11 running backs probably won't play Monday. Ahman Green will depart early with Favre and will be followed by Najeh Davenport. We simply don't see the potential for Green Bay to put many points on the board with this collection of talent.

The defense should be in better shape for the "cheese heads" but going against the Kansas City offense, it may not matter. Chiefs QB, Trent Green has simply been in his own universe throwing the football during workouts. All of the skilled players from the league's highest scoring offense in 2002 are back and clicking. The buzz of the first two weeks of the Chiefs' training camp has focused on improvements in Kansas City's sorry defense, which received almost all the team's off-season attention, but Green's play simply can not be overstated. With first-round draft pick Larry Johnson signed well in advance of the camp's opening, all 91 players were on hand for the first time in anybody's memory.

The Chiefs will feature new starters in end Vonnie Holliday and linebacker Shawn Barber and a new nickel back in Dexter McCleon to give a boost to the "D". Holliday especially can be expected to give great effort Monday, going against his former team. Coach Dick Vermeil normally spends most of his time with the offense, leaving the defense to coordinator Greg Robinson; however, Vermeil has been giving his defense a lot more attention than usual, demonstrating his comfort level with the offense and how determined he is to improve the defense greatly. Thus far, the Chiefs have showed a strong pass rush and generally were strong against the run. Vermeil is eager to see his stop troop on the field against the Packers and would like to see his first-team defense get off to a good start against Brett Favre and company. Without question he is looking for a strong performance and we expect his "D" to respond accordingly.

Under Sherman, Green Bay is just 1-5 SU/1-4-1 ATS in preseason road contests, with KC is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 exhibition road games. We look for those trends to continue at this neutral site game in Canton, Ohio as a re-vitalized Kansas City defense holds a depleted Packers offense in check.

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: KANSAS CITY 9 GREEN BAY 0!
