  • Handicapping Injury & Weather Factors

PRO INFO SPORTS takes all factors into consideration, including injuries and expected weather conditions, when handicapping investment opportunities.

While it is important to be aware of and to consider injuries when HANDICAPPING games, PRO INFO SPORTS contends that the general betting public often over-react when a star player is out of a contest, providing solid investment opportunities for us to deliver to our clients. Linesmakers will adjust the pointspread from 1 to 5 points to compensate for an injury to a big-name player and thus invite a balance of wagers on both teams. Frequently, though, PRO INFO SPORTS will form a strong “contrarian” opinion in such a situation for several reasons. First of all, there simply is not as big of a talent difference between the 1st and 2nd-stringers as the public perceives. College reserves are former high school stars, while pro reserves are former college stars. They come in fresh, rested, and eager to “play, perform, and prove” their value. Secondly, the other players on the team can usually be counted on to pull together with added concentration, execution, and sense of teamwork. They know that they have to perform at a higher level in their star’s absence, they don’t want to let the hurt teammate down, and/or they want to show that they are more than a “one-man team”. Finally, their opponent may well be ill-prepared emotionally for the game, thinking they can relax and knowing the challenge of facing the other team’s star player is not there.

These factors are most prominent and under-valued by the betting public in the first game missed by an injured star player. The handicapping value is lessened in the succeeding games if the injury is prolonged. The lines are more accurately adjusted, resulting from the solid play by the reserve and teammates, opponents not being caught by surprise, and the eventual physical, emotional, and psychological let down of the team with the injury.

Besides star player injuries, “unit” injuries are a very substantial consideration that PRO INFO SPORTS takes into account when handicapping games. Having 2 or more “non-star” players from one unit of the team injured is usually much more detrimental to a squad than if a single "superstar" is out. While not many public star football players toil on the offensive or defensive lines, a team with a hurting and depleted line unit may not be able to run or pass the ball effectively, or able to stop the other team’s attack, especially if the injuries play into their pponent’s strength. Another example would be a high-powered passing team likely having great success against a team with a hobbled secondary.

Atmospheric conditions can also have a big impact on sporting events. In perceived football “mismatches”, poor weather tends to lessen the advantage powerful teams have over weaker ponents. The underdogs’ chances of keeping the games close or even pulling off the outright upsets are enhanced, especially by turnovers which occur with more frequency in bad-weather games. Just the threat of turnovers can act as a great equalizer. Teams, in order to avoid fumbles and interceptions, become more offensively conservative. Either way, inclement weather usually portends defensive battles and low scores. Sub-freezing temperatures generally restrain deep passing attacks, giving an advantage to teams with superior running games or solid short-passing schemes. The importance of special teams are amplified in bad weather as teams with superior kicking games have a distinct edge over an inferior kicking team, especially in windy conditions.

Along with temperature, HUMIDITY has to be considered when factoring meteorological elements. An NFL team like Miami is conditioned to a hot and humid environment which is most extreme in the first month of the season. PRO INFO SPORTS data supports this logical assertion, as in September games since 1980, the Dolphins are an impressive 58-24 SU/48-31 ATS including 22-13 ATS at home. Take them out of their natural climate and their performance suffers. In December games, Miami is just 39-47 ATS, including 12-22 ATS on the road. Many of those road contests were against division opponents in the Northeast U.S. (Buffalo, New England, New York Jets), where they have gone 1-10 ATS in December over the last 11 years with the lone cover by one-half point. As demonstrated, teams like the Dolphins have the advantage when hosting a teams like the Patriots on a hot, humid day in September, while cold-weather squads like New England gain the edge when hosting warm-weather teams like Miami in December 20° weather.

ALTITUDE is another factor that has to be weighed for football and basketball HANDICAPPING. At arenas and stadiums one mile or more above sea level, the air is considerably thinner than those below 1000 feet in elevation. With the oxygen level greatly reduced at higher elevations, the heart and breathing rates increase to compensate. This is experienced as shortness of breath and early fatigue. It takes about 10 days for the body to completely acclimate to altitude, so teams making road trips to the Rocky Mountains don't have enough time to adjust. They often struggle, especially in the final period of a hard-fought contest.

PRO INFO SPORTS researched an NFL example and found that since 1990, visiting underdogs of 3 points or less are 0-6 SU/ATS at Denver, when playing off a home game and with a home game the following week. In these contests expected to be close against strong competition, the Broncos have won by an average of 7 points with no final score closer than 4 points of the point spread.

Denver’s “Mile-High” advantage is also established by the PRO INFO SPORTS discovery of a “bye-week” dichotomy. The Broncos at home, when off a week of rest and thus fully acclimated to the elevation (10+ days), are 8-2 SU/7-2-1 ATS; meanwhile, visiting teams off a bye (and thus fully acclimated to their own lower elevation) have come into Denver and dropped 4 of 6 SU/ATS.

As in poor-weather games, special teams play can become a more decisive factor in high-altitude affairs as well. Punts and placekicks travel longer distances due to decreased air resistance. The team with the more accurate and consistent kicking game will fare considerably better as they will be more likely to convert their increased kicking range into good field position and points.

PRO INFO SPORTS considers all of the NCAA Football games played in the Rocky Mountains region "altitude games", from El Paso, Texas (4,000 ft.) to Laramie, Wyoming (7,100 ft.), while in the NFL only Denver qualifies at 5,300 ft.

In the NBA, Denver and Salt Lake City are high-elevation sites. PRO INFO SPORTS research reveals the extra home-court advantage the Nuggets and Jazz enjoy. When they are playing at home with rest against unrested opponents they take full advantage of these fatigued teams that have had little or no time to acclimate to the higher elevation. The Jazz are an incredible 31-5 SU/22-11-1 ATS at home with rest vs. unrested opponents off a road game, while even the lightly regarded Nuggets become a force under similar circumstances. Denver is a very impressive 8-7 SU/10-5 ATS at home with rest vs. unrested opponents off a home game.

As PRO INFO SPORTS has verified, a big advantage can be gained by a team playing in its element vs. an opponent out of its element, whether it is temperature, humidity, precipitation, or altitude.

These injury and weather principles are, of course, generalities and ALL factors must be considered when analyzing games, but the monitoring and scrutinizing of these situations are examples of how PRO INFO SPORTS gains a significant advantage in HANDICAPPING for our clients.
