1 STAR SELECTION (2% of Bankroll)

    SYRACUSE -6½ over Miami, Ohio

The RedHawks limp into the Carrier Dome on Saturday night still looking for their first win to face a team that just ended a long losing streak on its own. Miami, Ohio opened their season with a 21-3 home loss to Northwestern, and followed that with an overtime loss at Purdue, 38-31. Back home last week they fell to 0-3 with another heartbreaking loss, as the RedHawks were defeated 16-14 by Kent State.

Syracuse posted their first victory of the season last week, winning at Illinois, 31-21, in a game that wasn’t as close as the score would seem to indicate. The Orange opened its season with close losses against Wake Forest and Iowa before breaking through in a big way last week.

Miami, Ohio has been known for a potent offense, but it’s been in a slow decline since QB Ben Roethlisberger left for the NFL. So far in 2006, the RedHawks are averaging a pathetic 16 ppg. The passing “attack” has been decent, but the team has struggled on the ground, racking up just under 100 rushing ypg on only 2.8 ypc. RB Brandon Murphy has not been healthy, although he picked up 92 yards on 20 carries last week. The offensive line has been a mess which is a big reason for the offensive struggles, as is the maturation of a young QB in Mike Kokal.

The defense has been unable to pick up the slack, allowing 25 ppg, as opponents have racked up 168 ypg on the ground. Last week, against Kent State, the RedHawks were abused for 386 yards, which includes 142 yards on the ground. With only 2 returning starters on defense, it’s little surprise that the defense has struggled as well early in the season.

Syracuse had showed some signs of putting together a winning effort and finally did last week as they exploded for 31 points against Illinois. The Orange wound up with over 202 yards on the ground, which bodes well for them this week against the RedHawks porous rush defense. Perry Patterson threw two touchdowns in the win and continues to pick up the offense that was installed last year by new coach Greg Robinson.

Defensively, the Orange are allowing just under 21 ppg on the season, although they are allowing 168 ypg on the ground as well. Last week they held the Illini to just 110 yards, forced two turnovers, and finished the game with five sacks. The defensive unit has done a tremendous job forcing mistakes and has already come up with 8 turnovers on the season.

We have 2 teams headed in opposite directions in this game. Miami is continuing their plummet and will have a hard time recovering from last week’s loss. Coach Shane Montgomery declared it to be a "MAC championship" game, but his team gave a listless effort, allowing the Golden Flashes to snap an 11-game losing streak and won in Oxford for the first time since 1988. For the 3rd straight game they failed to score a first-half touchdown.

Now they have to face a team like Kent State, snapped an 11-game losing streak last week. If the RedHawks had trouble scoring on likes of Northwestern and Kent, they aren’t likely to much success against the Syracuse defense. Again, the root of the problem is the offensive line, where the graduation of three fifth-year seniors has been compounded by injuries to two starters. Kent State sacked Kokal six times and chased him all afternoon at Yager Stadium. Kent's front four dominated Miami's inexperienced line, and the RedHawks have yielded a conference-high 15 sacks. Falling behind in Syracuse will only invite more of the same from Greg Robinson’s defense.

Now that the Orange finally got that long-awaited “W”, we look for them to keep the momentum going. After seeing a long losing streak snapped, decided favorites have used the new-found momentum for convincing wins. Specifically, favorites of more than 3 points off an underdog SU win to end a losing streak of at least 9 games are 6-0 SU & ATS over the past 20+ seasons in this rare situation. While that’s a small number of qualifying games, the results have been very impressive, as these teams have won SU by an average of 35 points, while crushing the spread by more than 25 points a game on average.

The Carrier Dome is an unfriendly place for unfamiliar foes, as Syracuse is 16-2 ATS at home vs. non-conference opponents, including covering the last 8 straight. The night crowd will have some new-found enthusiasm for their team with last week’s win and will help the Orange to a double-digit victory here.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: SYRACUSE 28 MIAMI, OH 17
