    Opinion Selection (1% of Bankroll)

    SAN DIEGO -3 over Seattle

Former AFC West foes get together on Saturday night when the Chargers host the Seahawks. Now, it will be a non-conference game as Seattle currently resides in the NFC. The home fans will get their last preseason look at new starting QB Philip Rivers who has shown good signs. He will play at least the entire first half against the Seahawks but appear only briefly in the preseason finale against the 49ers. LaDainian Tomlinson is being held out of preseason games as a precautionary measure.

The Seahawks come in feeling quite good about themselves. They put up 30 points in a win at Indianapolis last week, including 20 in the first half. Most of Seattle’s starters should be in for the first half; however, don’t be surprised to see MVP RB Shaun Alexander take an early seat.

The Chargers are coming off a 24-3 loss at Chicago. It was quite a contrast from San Diego's 17-3 opening win over Green Bay. Philip Rivers said it was good to face some adversity in August, and the Seahawks will be another good challenge. "The worst thing that could happen to us, is for us to cruise along here, four straight games, have everything be good, everybody talking about 'Oh, what a nice 18-play drive, oh, they're going good, oh look, they scored two more touchdowns in Chicago,' and us going into that first game and setting ourselves for something bad to happen. I'm not saying I'm glad we made mistakes, but I think it's good for us, everything that happened, and the guys responded well. This was a pretty tough week of practice. We grinded out there pretty hard. The guys did a great job pushing through it, they were tired, and getting back to focusing on fundamentals."

This contrasts with Seattle, which broke camp on Thursday talking about what a great preseason they’ve had. Feeling the bulk of their work is finished, they will have a tough time matching the motivation of a proud team looking to bounce back from an embarrassing defeat and prove themselves against a Super Bowl team.

A couple of PRO INFO SPORTS NFLX POWER SYSTEMS support our theories, as home teams off a road loss are a sharp 26-14 ATS vs. opponents off a road victory, while home favorites of 2½-4½ points off a road SU loss of 17+ points, scoring less than 8 points, are 21-6 ATS.

It’s been a bit of a short week for Seattle with Sunday’s game at Indianapolis, the trip back to training camp, breaking camp, going over the hill to Seattle, and now heading back out for this game. The Chargers should be the fresh and feisty team here and earn a SU & ATS win over the Seahawks.

    Friday's 2 STAR SELECTION (2.5% of Bankroll)

    OAKLAND -3 over Detroit

Don’t look now, but the Raiders have the best mark in the 2006 NFLX season at 3-0. They will look to continue their preseason momentum at home on Friday night when they host the Lions. Detroit opened the preseason with a 17-13 home triumph over the Broncos, but lost by a 20-16 count in the follow-up at Cleveland last Friday.

Oakland had won mostly with turnovers in the first 2 games, but finally got some help from the first-string offense last week, as QB Aaron Brooks played a solid half. Backup Andrew Walter also had a strong game.

The main offensive forces for the Lions have yet to get on track, as QB Jon Kitna and RB Kevin Jones have not done much. Kitna has completed 9-of-17 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown during the preseason to date, while Jones has rushed 13 times for just 32 yards.

Overall, it would appear the Raiders are in much better shape here for another strong outing. The Lions aren’t exactly treating it like the Super Bowl.

"This game might be a little more important because the starters get more playing time," Lions defensive end James Hall said. "But other than that, it doesn't mean any more or any less than any other time we're out on the field before the season starts for real.

    "It's just an exhibition game."

Rookie head coach Rod Marinelli's travel plans for Friday night's exhibition game at Oakland certainly won't leave time for sightseeing. In fact, they border on bizarre. The Lions aren’t departing until Friday morning and then returning after the game. Kickoff is 10 p.m., Detroit time. The team will spend a few hours in a hotel after landing. Total flying time is about 10 hours and more than 4,000 miles, with a football game squeezed in between. Additionally, this is the second straight road game for the Lions, while the Raiders are enjoying a second straight home contest.

For some teams, the exhibition season may be more about teaching, evaluating new players and staying healthy. But after three straight losing seasons, winning games is more crucial than usual for Oakland this season. "Winning is definitely important because it helps with the attitude. Guys get that itch and always want to feel like winning," said a Raiders linebacker. "We don't want to feel losing. We did enough of that last year. It's a lot different this year. Last year in the preseason we were 0-3 before winning our last game. That kind of set the tempo early for our season. This year we have the attitude that we want to win."

Art Shell stressed the importance of setting a tempo at home, making it an unpleasant place to visit. He knows his team has to give the fans something to cheer about, which the team did last week. We look for more of the same here, as we like to play ON a coach looking to establish a winning atmosphere in a particular role, such at home, and overall as Shell is. When the players on a team state a goal of winning the preseason games, it makes it even stronger, especially when the opponent is not matching that mindset. When one side’s goal is to win an exhibition win, they will have a decided edge against an opponent that is not making winning the game a priority.

We expect the Raiders to jump on the jet-lagged Lions and get their 4th SU & ATS win of the 2006 NFLX season.

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: OAKLAND 21 DETROIT 3

    Game Note:
Oakland did indeed "jump on the jet-lagged Lions", as they scored a TD on the 3rd play from scrimmage, cruised to a 21-0 halftime lead, and never looked back.
