  • Bonds sidelined again with back problems

CHICAGO (AP) -- Barry Bonds' back started hurting again and the San Francisco Giants star was out of the lineup for Wednesday night's game with the Chicago Cubs.

"We're not making plans for him to play tomorrow," Giants manager Felipe Alou said before the game. The Cubs and Giants end their series Thursday afternoon.

Asked if Bonds might head to the disabled list, Alou said: "I'm afraid, yeah, of course. My feeling is 50-50."

Bonds missed three games with back spasms before returning to the lineup Tuesday night, scoring the only run in the Giants' 1-0 victory.

But Bonds was in pain when he woke up Wednesday morning and had an MRI exam in the afternoon.

"He was fine during the game. He was fine after the game. He wasn't fine when he woke up," Giants trainer Stan Conte said.

"I got a call. We were here at 10 o'clock. It seems to be a reoccurrence of the same thing."

Results of the MRI were not available before the game.

"I was surprised. It is what it is. We're living minute-to- minute, day-to-day and we'll see how it does," Conte said,

"Right now it's the long flight and the bed overnight that got him. So do we keep away from beds now? I don't know. It's hard to predict what's going to happen because Barry recovers so quickly."

Jeffrey Hammonds got the start in left field for San Francisco. Bonds has been in the Giants' lineup just eight times in the last 14 games because of an ear infection and his sore back. He is batting just .087 (2-for-23) in those eight games but has 12 walks, seven of them intentional.
