  • Cubs' Sosa on DL with sprained ligament in back

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder Sammy Sosa on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a sprained ligament in his lower back. The move is retroactive to May 16.

On Tuesday, Sosa underwent an MRI that revealed a sprained ligament, but more importantly, did not show any disc damage.

He suffered the injury while sneezing shortly after entering the Cubs clubhouse on Sunday before Chicago's 4-2 win over San Diego.

During the game, he received treatment in the training room.

Sosa homered in the first two games against the Padres, smacking his 549th career home run Saturday to move past Mike Schmidt and into ninth place on the all-time list.

In 35 games this season, Sosa is batting .291 with 10 homers and 24 RBI.

In a related move the Cubs purchased the contract of outfielder Jason Dubois from Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday.
