  • Thome out at least two games; Wolf will miss start

PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies first baseman Jim Thome will sit out at least two games with a sprained index finger, and left-hander Randy Wolf will miss one start because of elbow tendinitis.

Shawn Wooten took Thome's spot in the lineup against Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

"He's been playing with lot of pain since spring training," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "The doctor told him take two days off now. That's the only way it's going to get better. We just have to suck it up right now. Four games, five games, whatever it is."

Thome missed three weeks in spring training after he broke the middle finger on his right hand. He missed one game earlier this month after receiving a cortisone shot on his left thumb, and left a game early last week after aggravating the injury.

Thome sprained the ligaments in his right index finger because he changed the way he's gripping the bat to compensate for the thumb injury.

A notoriously slow starter, Thome is batting .318 with 11 homers and 22 RBI in 35 games.

"I just want to get it over with," Thome said. "I don't like missing games, but I'd rather get it over with."

Bowa said he's not surprised Thome has played through the pain.

"He's a blue-collar worker that loves the game of baseball and doesn't want to let his teammates down, and feels that him at 70 percent is better than anyone else at 100," Bowa said. "He looks out for the team. He respects his teammates, the game, the staff, the organization, and he's trying to fight through this."

Wolf blanked Colorado until the seventh inning of Philadelphia's 7-6 loss to the Rockies on Monday. He wasn't pleased to come out after allowing a bloop single with one out and the Phillies leading 6-1 in the seventh, but saw the trainer immediately after exiting.

"That'll be his call when he comes back," Bowa said. "He said he felt better today, but obviously we won't take any chances. If he has stiffness, it's something we'll have to wait on. The doctor said it was a little tendinitis, maybe."

Wolf, an All-Star last season, is 2-3 with a 3.16 ERA in eight starts. Amaury Telemaco could start in Wolf's place against San Diego on Saturday, but Bowa hasn't made a final decision.

The Phillies already are without closer Billy Wagner (groin), reliever Roberto Hernandez (calf) and second baseman Placido Polanco (quadriceps). They also placed reliever Brian Powell on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of neck spasms, and called up Geoff Geary from Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre. Powell pitched one scoreless inning in his only appearance since being coming up.
