Senate Bill 40: Part of the Solution to California’s Budget Crisis
California faces a budget deficit of more than $25 billion and a record 12 percent unemployment rate. Slashed budgets have forced deep cuts to public services…schools, law enforcement, fire protection, road maintenance and healthcare have all been negatively impacted. Working families and seniors need the services but cannot afford higher taxes.
There are no “silver bullets” to the state’s budget and economic challenges, but Senate Bill 40, California First: The State Funding, Job Creation and Online Gaming Accountability Act, introduced by State Senator Lou Correa (D-Orange County) and sponsored by the California Online Poker Association, is part of the solution to help solve the crisis.
Today, nearly two million Californians wager $13 billion playing unregulated online poker; 60 percent of all players in America. None of this money stays in California, going instead to support illegal, offshore interests. Nothing stops these operators from targeting children and enticing them to gamble. Senate Bill 40 is carefully written to regulate and limit gaming, while keeping the revenue and jobs here in California, helping state and local governments.
