  • Books Suffer Indigestion On Turkey Day Favorites

On Turkey Day, give me 305 with and 308 with. The “with” is subjective, but 305 and 308 will be etched in stone come Thursday morning.

If you have not yet caught on, 305 is this week's betting # for the Titans and 308 is, of course, “How ‘bout those Cowboys?” By mid-morning, if the final score is Titans 35 Lions 10 and then the Cowboys take a 24-3 lead early in the third quarter, bettors could be enjoying both their dinner and a profitable day.

But if that scenario holds, a lot of BMs will be looking for the Pepto before the sun goes down. These games are always a little tricky when you look at a cold, hard number you would want to book them at. But that is perception as opposed to reality.

So, how far do you cheat the line with your sendout if you were in the captain's chair? Early Monday, it looks like a painted 11 and 13 on the two favorites. Do you let some value guys take the first hit on the dogs because you will need them as game time approaches, or do you book the games as though North Texas State and Utah State are involved?

Times are different, and I suppose most books would say you have to make bettors pay if they want those two sides on the first legs of their five-teamer.

Winning one game is hard enough, but the nature of the beast is this: The new wave of punters don't want to win 91 cents on the dollar. This genre wants 20-1 or 40-1 for their Thanksgiving meal.

So Lucky's will probably sell some 13 on the Lions and 14 on the Seahawks just for a little insurance policy. For the parlay cards, we could save time by not even putting teams in the right-hand (dog) column.

To save the clerks from making multiple moves, we could have a single betting # for the following teams: the two NFL favs and Oklahoma, Texas, Florida and USC which will be as plentiful as cranberry sauce in a few days.

The motive of this exercise is not to extract any sympathy for bookmakers, but just a brush stroke to illustrate how far things have come in the quest for big payoffs. I have talked about progressive payouts and big scores, and how bettors are looking for the easy outcard. There is none, but they are still putting forth their best effort.

This week's card does set off a betting frenzy, and we will be jacking up the prices in most cases from early on thru the finish. As Arne K. Lang has said, the “Towel Tossers” will be out in force these last five weeks, especially the NFL season.

So, a lot of the “smarts” will be on the same sides as the house starting Thursday morning. I remember about 15 years ago when we won just about every major decision on straight bets from Thursday thru Sunday, but by Sunday night were in the red about $500K for the week.

How that can happen is simple when you pay off about 200 four- to eight-teamers. You will see if the books are having a good or bad week come Friday morning, just by checking the adjustments on remaining games, or the lack of same.

So, whatever is the case, reflect a little on how good we have it. Have a Happy Thanksgiving; just don't choke on the “wishbone.”

    Take Care,
    Jimmy Vaccaro
