  • Touts’ Loud Calls to Action Help Books Get More Business

Promoting sportsbooks is a delicate issue for casinos, which do not wish to spend a lot of marketing dollars on customers who are perceived as less than highly profitable. The casinos rely on the unique environment of the books themselves to create traffic.

We all do our share, offering traditional perks such as contests, complementary drinks, VIP sections and so on. But the casinos’ preferred, cost-effective method is to use both in-house and outside influences to push the action.

I could cite a lot of names, but Dr. Bob has been doing his share for the past few years without getting the credit I believe he deserves from the books. We all know if he is picking more winners than losers; the books are seeing players bet into third-generation numbers. Like last Saturday when games such as Iowa, Florida State and San Jose State moved a few ticks.

My point is that this occurs on Thursday, which is normally a dead day and creates lots of play we would normally not get. We are all trolling for players during slow times with tricks such as no vig and higher payouts to at least get people in the door. Put me on board with those ploys but we need more.

We need to exploit the natural inclination by bettors to belly up to the window without any extra effort on our part except to write the ticket and make sure the money is straight. I will not venture into the area of the good business/bad business syndrome which is based on fallacious thinking. I'll just state this simple, absolute fact: YOU NEED BUSINESS.

There was an outfit called SCORE, out of Boston I think, which moved some games as much as 12 points. They rode up and down the Strip in a car bearing a sign that got attention by alleging a certain game would be over before it started. They were on a pretty good roll until they sent out a Peach Bowl play -- West Virginia vs. Georgia Tech, if memory serves me. They did their homework and flogged the daylights out of the favorite, moving the opening number of 6 all the way to 14. Their only slipup was a failure to check the weather. You got it! MONSOONVILLE!!!

Not red-boarding the final, but the game drew three times the normal action, which translated into big-time profits for the books.

For years, DOC'S had bettors buzzing about what would be its Big 10 Game of the Year. All week long, people were guessing which game it would be.

The point I am making about all this intense speculation based on touts marketing, is that the cost to the books was $0. But boy, does it get the bettors' attention, and bring in big action

Let me finish with a side note: Even if you are following MOSES to the mountain and betting second- and third-generation number moves, better bring your platinum card as you will need it.

So, I believe Dr. Bob and his brethren help us in ways some myopic sportsbook execs cannot see. And I have just one request from an old Three Stooges skit. Calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard would be good to show up Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

    Take care,
    Jimmy Vaccaro
