CSI FAVORED TO WIN THURSDAY NIGHT RATINGS WAR AGAINST GREY’S ANATOMY
PinnacleSports Posts Odds On Which Season Premiere Will Win Thursday
    Night

WILLEMSTAD, CURACAO (September 18, 2006)—The new fall television season kicks into high gear this week with the return to the airwaves of several of the most popular shows on TV. One of the most highly anticipated nights of season premieres takes place Thursday when ABC’s hit drama “Grey’s
Anatomy” moves from Sundays in an attempt to unseat reigning ratings king “CSI”. With the showdown between “Grey’s” and “CSI” on tap for 9 p.m. this Thursday, PinnacleSports has created odds on which season premiere will draw more viewers.

The largest sports betting site on the Internet, PinnacleSports is the
source for betting odds on all things entertainment from television
ratings, hit reality series, and award shows. Drawing over 20 million
viewers on average, CBS hit crime series “CSI” has dominated Thursday
nights for years and has opened as an overwhelming 4/11 favorite (i.e.,
win $4 for every $11 bet) to trounce the season premiere of it’s new
primetime opponent. While “Grey’s Anatomy” built a huge following on
Sunday nights, PinnacleSports.com lists the hospital drama as a 5/2
underdog (i.e., win $5 for every $2 bet) to outdraw “CSI” this week.

“CSI has been a ratings juggernaut for CBS since moving to Thursday night, defeating all comers on the way to becoming the most popular show on TV not named American Idol,” said Simon Noble of PinnacleSports. “The
move of Grey’s into the 9 p.m. timeslot on Thursday definitely represents a big challenge for the champ, but we believe CSI fans will remain loyal and propel the season premiere to the top of the charts yet again. While Grey’s Anatomy will definitely draw a huge audience, the show will find its new home on Thursday nights much less cozy than the Sundays it has previously dominated.”

'Crime' doesn't pay for CBS as 'Grey's' wins duel
    By Paul J. Gough
    Reuters
NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - "Grey's Anatomy" took Round 1 in its new Thursday time slot against CBS powerhouse "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," leading ABC to its first season-opening win on the night since at least 1991 and its strongest Thursday overall since May 2000.

The medical drama, which formerly aired on Sundays, delivered 25.4 million viewers and an 11.0 rating/26 share in adults 18-49 during its 9 p.m. bow, according to Nielsen Media Research. "CSI" trailed with 22.6 million viewers and a 7.7/18.

"Grey's" racked up the honors for ABC, becoming the first regular-series show ever to beat "CSI" in audience head-to-head. It also was the best time-period numbers ABC has had for a series in six years. And "Grey's" got its third-best ratings ever behind this year's Super Bowl two-parter.

That impressive demo rating rolled over everything else in primetime. "Grey's" third-season premiere was up 6.4 million viewers and 33% in adults 18-49 from the second-season premiere, which had "Desperate Housewives" as its lead-in. Even the 8 p.m. clips show brought in 13.7 million viewers and a 5.0/14 to come in second place behind "Survivor: Cook Islands" (17.4 million, 6.5/18).

The numbers for "CSI" were impressive compared with the rest of primetime, yet down from the 29 million and 10.2/25 for last year's premiere.

Last season's cliffhanger worked wonders for the 13-year-old NBC mainstay "ER," which won 10 p.m. with 15.6 million viewers and a 6.8/18 in adults 18-49 against series premieres on ABC and CBS. That's up from last year's season premiere of 14.4 million and a 6.8/18.

Things were much more complicated for "ER's" opposition: the series premieres of ABC's "Six Degrees" (12.6 million, 5.4/14) and CBS' "Shark" (14.7 million, 4.1/11). "Degrees" came out ahead of "Shark" by 32% in the demo, but "Shark" didn't have as steep a drop in viewers as its ABC rival.

"Shark" fell from 15.2 million viewers to 14.3 million at 10:30 p.m., while the "Degrees" bow dove from 14.3 million viewers to 10.9 million at 10:30 p.m. But in the first week, the "CSI" coattails weren't what they used to be. Last year's premiere of "Criminal Minds" -- one night only after "CSI" -- kept 19.6 million viewers and a 6.5/17 in the demo.

The 8 p.m. hour belonged to "Survivor," which kept the majority of its viewers and demo rating from last week's premiere while being off only slightly from last year. Beyond "Grey's," NBC had a pleasant surprise with "My Name Is Earl" (8.8 million, 3.8/11) and especially with "The Office" (9.1 million, 4.3/11), which built upon the "Earl" audience and did the best demo rating it has had since March 2006.

Fox's Thursday schedule was a nonstarter, with the sitcoms "'Til Death" (5.8 million, 2.2/7) and "Happy Hour" (4.4 million, 1.7/4) declining and "Celebrity Duets" (3.3 million, 1.2/3) dwindling. Lost in the battle between "Grey's" and "CSI" was NBC's "Deal or No Deal," which in its third night this week averaged 10.3 million viewers and a 3.6/9.

For the night, ABC had 17.4 million viewers and a 7.2/19 in 18-49, followed by CBS (18.3 million, 6.1/16), NBC (11.6 million, 4.8/12), Fox (4.2 million, 1.6/4) and the CW (2.3 million, 0.9/2).

Meanwhile, Friday went to NBC in the adults 18-49 demographic. NBC won at 8 p.m. with "Deal or No Deal" (11.6 million, 3.3/12), at 9 p.m. with "Dateline NBC" (8.7 million, 3.2/10) and at 10 p.m. with the season premiere of "Law & Order" (10.9 million, 3.5/11).

CBS won the night in viewers with the season bows of 8 p.m.'s "The Ghost Whisperer" (10 million, 3.1/11), 9 p.m.'s "Close to Home" (12 million, 3.0/11) and 10 p.m.'s "Numbers" (11.4 million, 3.1/10). "Numbers" topped "Law & Order" in viewership as the latter was in a new time slot, moving from Wednesdays last year.

At 9 p.m., ABC's "Men in Trees" (8.2 million, 2.4/10) saw some gains from its lead-in, a repeat of "Grey's Anatomy" (6.1 million, 2.0/7), though it remained solidly in third place behind "Close to Home" and "Dateline NBC." ABC stayed in third place at 10 p.m. with "20/20" (7.5 million, 2.3/8).
