MASON'S LEWIS GETS HIS SHOT IN THE NFL AFTER SIGNING WITH THE NEW YORK GIANTS

    5/1/2006

Jai Lewis will make his NFL debut with the New York Giants.

FAIRFAX, Va. (May 1, 2006) - Senior Jai Lewis has played more men’s basketball games for George Mason than any other player in school history. Now, he’s on a mission to be the first George Mason student-athlete to make the leap to the National Football League. The 6-foot-7, 290-pound center of the basketball team has agreed to terms on a contract with the New York Giants.

“During the seventh round (of the draft), I spoke to my agent and he told me a few teams were interested,” Lewis said. “The Giants were the only ones that came at me hard and I felt comfortable going with them. They told me I’d be a tight end or an offensive tackle. It doesn’t matter to me (which position I play) as long as I get on the field.”

Lewis, who was named All-District by the NABC and All-Conference by the CAA, began the process of preparing for a career in the NFL last month after participating in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, a pre-draft tournament for NBA hopefuls. That tournament came just days after Mason’s trip to the Final Four. After playing well at P.I.T., Lewis returned to Fairfax, hired an agent, and began working out in football-specific drills.

Last week, Lewis hosted nearly a dozen NFL scouts in a private workout that showed both his talent and potential. The Giants were one of the 11 teams to attend and they contacted him at the conclusion of this weekend’s draft. Lewis will be in New York on May 12 to sign a contract and he will take part in a mini-camp beginning on May 13.

Lewis last played football in high school, where he played tight end, defensive end, fullback and punter. He was recruited by several major Division I football programs before spending a year at Maine Central Institute.
