Why Gas Is So High
Interesting conversation here on this topic. It was only 10 years ago that gas was at $1.27 and the Clinton Admin ordered the Justice Dept and Energy Dept to investigate why gas was so expensive. Guess what? They found no collusion or price gouging/fixing just like the Carter and Nixon Administrations found when they investigated and just like what this latest investigation will find. Anyone who seriously believes that this type of behavior is going on and that oil companies are giving some senator from RI or IL or wherever a few grand to keep quiet and artificially keep crude oil prices at $70 per gallon also believes in big foot and the loch ness monster. Crude oil prices alone account for about $1.70 of the price of gas right now. China recently passed Japan as the #2 consumer of oil. Along with India, they have 8 times the population as the US and are gobbling up oil. Couple that with any time some mullah from Iran spouts off about nukes and the price of crude shoots up. Also, America's crude oil production has dropped 45.3% in the last 35 years and you know consumption here has not dropped so where do you think we are getting our oil from?
With disruptions in Nigeria and refining problems still being overcome from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, supply is down. Last year's energy bill mandates arbitrary increases in blended ethanol use that so exceed current ethanol production that it is causing gasoline shortages and therefore huge price spikes.
You also have other regulations that call for specific "botique" gas blends depending on where you live and what your air quality is like. Thus if gas in LA is in short supply, you can't bring it in from Denver because the blend is different and that creates shortages and higher prices.
As noted above, there is no bogeyman or collusion. It's very simple supply and demand. Right now supply is low and demand is very high. We either need to conserve, increase our domestic production dy drilling in Alaska and off the coasts of CA and FL (these scenarios are all severly limited by our gov't) or find alternative sources of energy.
One last note to BC worried about these huge oil company profits: the average profit on a gallon of gas is 9 cents or between 5 - 5.7%. While in contrast pharmaceutical companies make nearly 16% profit. The increased demand, rising prices (which they have no control over) all lend to these windfall profits. The biggest contributor is our Federal Government who will not allow these companies to increase their refining capabilities or drill in this country for the billions of gallons that are on our own soil. The fact that they are not able to spend on R&D and exploration make these profits even higher.Last edited by BackDoorCvr; 04-30-2006, 04:09 PM."Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have..."
