Wayne, as you know i was there for the superbowl this year. Not only being the poorest city, it is also the highest in crime rate. There is only one reason i would go back and that is to see a Tigers game in the summertime.

I've never been to most big cities but i've honestly never been scared walking around Boston in the day or Night. I didn't feel comfortable doing it in Cleveland and i wouldn't do it for sure in Detroit!

Lets put it this way wayne.... I walked through Central Park at night where all the drug dealers are hanging out.. I actually felt safer there than i did in Detroit. I have been to NYC numerous times and never had a problem... Everyone does there own thing and leave you alone. But Detroit on the other hand.............................................. .................

DETROIT...it's poor all right, but the suburbs north hold a lot of money. i'm by no means rich, and i live just north of the city, and you shouldn't be afraid to do anything within the down town district... the casino's are nice, joe louis, cobo hall, comerica park, ford field, the woodward strip, compuware building, hart plaza, it's all pretty nice and new! every event i've been too in the last 20 years...never had any kind of problem...walking in the streets, drunk with everybody else after the wings won their first cup in how ever many years was great...i go to the fireworks every year, many football/baseball games...take my kids to the fox for many events...
now with all of that said, i feel perfectly safe in the main district area...but i wouldn't venture to any of the places that i'm sure opera showed on her show! (did not see the show)...have hung out at belle isle during the summer...nobody bothered us in any way, but i did have a buddy (a punk none the less) used to go to bell isle by himself and pump his stereo (he's white) and told me how he got boxed in and harassed and feered for his life...have pulled into the housing areas by the old tiger stadium to drink a few before going to the game, and after a few minutes we felt like we were being watched...just that ugly feeling...and of course we promptly left....but any city event...you're fine!

I agree in general.
I'm in a suburb bordering Detroit and sell real estate all over the place. I've been in some damn bad places in the city and it gets scary. I can also say there is not one major city I've been to that doesn't have some damn scary places. We are all losing our jobs here, not just in manufacturing either, I know quite a few "country club" types who have filed for bankruptcy and are being forced to sell their homes. This is a horrible time for us right now and if we continue to lose jobs I don't see it improving. In the tri-county area (includes Detroit) we have 38,000 homes on the market compared to 11,000 in 2001. It's really quite sad. Detroits city council is a table of egotisitcal, cry baby, self centered thieves, which actually is right in line with the mayor, probably why they can't agree on anything. Bottom line Downtown has improved and is a pretty safe destination just don't go off of the beaten path.GOOD LUCK ALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!
