This is what we need to go to in the future

I'm not a tree hugger or anything like that, but I hope we can go to E85 fuel in the future. There are many cars that are made to use both regular gasoline and E85. It is a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% petroleum. Ethanol can be made from corn (mostly used), wheat, and sugar cane. We have a shit load of corn here in the midwest and we can have an almost unlimited supply of fuel if we manufactured all cars to run on E85 in the future. Here is some background on this fuel:

        E85 Background

E85 fuel is a blend of 85% ethanol and just 15% petroleum that is designed for use in flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs). Ethanol can be made from virtually any starch feedstock, such as sugar cane, wheat or milo. Today, US ethanol is produced mainly from corn, an abundant and renewable source. A bushel of field corn will yield 1.6 lbs of corn oil, 10.9 lbs of high protein feed (distillers dried grains or DDG), 2.6 lbs of corn meal and 31.5 lbs of starch-which can be converted to beverages, sweeteners or 2.7 gallons of fuel ethanol. Some Minnesota ethanol producers are running at even higher efficiencies. The US Department of Agriculture reports a net energy balance for ethanol production of 1.67. In other words, for every one unit of energy used to produce ethanol and its accompanying co-products, 1.67 units of energy results. However, the US Department of Energy reports that petroleum refining can actually have a negative energy balance. For example, every unit of energy expended in gasoline production is reported to result in only 0.79 units of energy in the form of gasoline.

E85 has several benefits as a renewable-based fuel. It helps reduce tailpipe and greenhouse gas emissions while supporting the economy and reducing our need for overseas oil imports. It’s also very easy to use.

E85 is environment-friendly. It has the highest oxygen content of any fuel available today, allowing it to burn more completely (cleaner) than conventional gasoline. E85 contains 80% less gum-forming compounds, like the olefins found in gasoline. Production and use of E85 results in a nearly 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Many major U.S. cities suffer from unhealthy levels of smog (ground-level ozone). E85 may be able to help. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that high-blend ethanol fuels can significantly reduce harmful exhaust emissions such as carbon monoxide (-40%) and smog-forming pollutants (-15%).

E85 is new and Minnesota leads in its development with more than 140 retail locations. FFVs are "flexible" and not yet dedicated to just E85 use. E85 also contains lower energy density than gasoline (BTUs per gallon). Typically, its lower pump price offsets a slightly lower fuel economy.

I know Ford is working on a Diesel Engine that puts out little to no pollution. Eventually you're going to see cars made with Diesel engines. And I can't imagine the Gas companies allowing less gas being used for cars as that would hurt them big time.

Gas went up again today at $2.89, $2.99, $3.09

What pisses me off most about the gas situation. How come when the price of crude oil goes up the price at the pump goes up. However, when the crude oil price drops the price at the pump is very slow to react.

The price of oil is below pre-Katrina level. Why hasn't gas dropped to pre-Katrina leven?

                      frankb,

its cause its all a fuckin scam, the oil companies are getting fucken richer and richer off the people of the USA cause of katrina. Thats the excuse that they use anyway. Profits in oil companies are thru the roof. We as americans need to wake the fuck up. The only thing holding our economy afloat is the housing market. If/when that slows were sure to go into a Recession if not worse. Everything we do will be affected long term cause of these fuel prices. Its all BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!

SCAM is the correct word here. Exxon/Mobile made 34 Billion in profits in their first quarter this year.

I still want to know why the price of oil is below pre-Katrina levels but I'm still paying $2.90? I paid 2.64 the Monday that Katrina hit.

That's how it works. Say gas is $2.00 per and the price goes up to $2.16. They come out and say well gas prices will be coming down. When the price does come down it comes down to $2.10. Then to $2.18 back down to $2.14 and so on. Never coming back anywhere near the $2.00 that it was. They move the price up and down so slow that I think people really don't notice it that much and they just get use to it.

Last year's storms here in Florida gave a local zoo a reason to raise their price to get in, saying that they lost business so they just had to raise the price from about $14.00 to around $20.00. OK, the storm is way over, did they lower the price? No. Do people still go and pay the higher price YES! When will we wake up???
