  • New Debate....Paying College Athletes?

Do you feel college athletes should be paid?

    I say emphatically NO....

I understand and acknowledge the fact that college sports generates millions and millions of dollars for colleges and Universities and that college athletes carry a heavier load and more responsibilites than their academic only peers. But the financial costs of a college education coupled with room and board, meals, books, tutors etc...surely should offset any pay they could be offered.

....And if they are given a pay for being a student athlete, Wouldn't it be fair to say that they should then be required to pay for some of the expenses for the student part of being a student athlete, that is taken for granted. Or should they be required to sign a contract stating they are to stay in college for the 4 years. Any early entry into Professional sports requires they pay back moneys earned or pay a fine....

Just a question... and some thoughts.....I'm pretty bored right now...If I wasn't doing this right now I would probably be looking for some nasty gross overwieght naked women pictures to be posting here....Right now I don't have the stomach for that....
    Remember the three R's:
Respect for self; Respect for others; and Responsibility for all your actions.

I agree totally RWall. I'm also against coming out early to enter the pro ranks. I think a scholarship should be a binding contract for four years. If you sign up then you should fullfill your obligation. It is boring as hell today. Where the hell is everybody? Were they all at the Angels game last night?

IMO- The NFL & NBA should have minor leagues and not count on colleges to provide this service for free to them. It would solve the problem of kids not having any business in school having to go just because they want to have a chance at the pros.
We sure dont have alot of problems w/ baseball doing it & we still enjoy following college baseball.

College athletes are pretty much being paid already, they get free tuition to schools that most of them could never pay for on there own. I know a few guys that played or play college sports now and they all get money every time they go out of town and it is way more than they need, any left over money they get to keep of course. IMO they should not be paid for what they do.

First of all college athletic scholarships are year to year. Kids can and do lose it if they break school rules , get injured or if like at South Carolina the coach thinks a walk on can do a better job. If the scholarship is a 4 yr comittment on behalf of both parties then I agree no money. But if it is just a yearly thing based on performance then pay the kid.
