LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Kansas guard J.R. Giddens was slashed on his right leg by a knife in a fight outside a bar early Thursday.

The extent of the injury was not clear, although police said it was "not life-threatening." The university said the wound was to the lower leg.
"We are still in the fact-gathering stage," coach Bill Self said. "Out of respect to everyone involved, at this time we have nothing to say."

Giddens, who will be a junior next season, either drove himself or had a friend drive him to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, police Sgt. Dan Ward said.

Giddens was one of at least six people injured in the fighting, police said. Ward said a 24-year-old Olathe man sustained head injuries. Giddens and four other men were injured by a 4-inch folding knife wielded by the Olathe man. None of the injuries appeared serious, the officer said. It may be several days before arrests are made.

Last season, Giddens averaged 10.1 points and shot just 33 percent from behind the 3-point line. As a freshman, he averaged 11 points, shot 40 percent from 3-point range and was named to the All-Big 12 freshman team.
