  • Mariano Rivera family member electrocuted

PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Two relatives of Mariano Rivera's wife were electrocuted while cleaning the pool at the home of the New York Yankees closer.

Victor Dario Avila, a cousin of Clara Rivera, and his 14-year-old son were killed Saturday, Rivera's cousin, Irma Rivera, told The Associated Press.

ESPN has learned that Rivera has flown to the scene. It is not known when Rivera plans to return to be with the Yankees. The ALCS against the Red Sox begins Tuesday night in the Bronx.

When asked whether the situation would affect the Yankees' roster, GM Brian Cashman told the AP: "It's a personal issue. That's that. We have until 10 a.m. Tuesday to deal with our roster."

The teenager, also named Victor Dario Avila, apparently touched an electrical wire while cleaning the pool in Puerto Caimito, 40 miles east of Panama City. His father died trying to save him, Irma Rivera said.

Avila was a fishermen who also cleaned and maintained Rivera's home. Clara Rivera was traveling to Panama after the accident, family members said.

"Everyone is sad," Irma Rivera said. "Victor was a good man."

The Yankees advanced by beating Minnesota 6-5 in 11 innings Saturday, with Rivera getting the win.

Various newspapers in the New York area reported that Rivera and his wife were dealing with a "personal issue" -- an issue they were informed about after the Yankees' win Saturday.

The team would not comment on the situation then -- or even confirm that it involved Rivera. When asked whether he was all right as he left the clubhouse after the game, Rivera said, "Yeah, yeah," and patted a reporter on the shoulder.

"This is a private family matter of one our players, and we're not going to be able to comment," Yankees spokesman Rick Cerrone said.
