There seems to be a big misconception at this site regarding IP addresses.

First the same physical location can have multiple computers/users with the same IP Address.

A business location with a T1 internet connection can have 100s of computers connected to the internet ALL using the same IP Address. The same applies to a condo complex that share a internet connection. You can have 2 members who don't know each other with the same IP address.

My home has a cable internet connection. In my home I have a wireless network with 5 computers. Once again all 5 computers will have the same internet IP address.

Most home cable internet connections do NOT have a static IP address. What that means? The IP address changes. Tomorrow, I might have a different IP address than what I have today. Turn off your cable modem for a few hours or a day. When you turn it back on there's a good possibility you'll have a new IP address.

Also, it is possible for me to post at the same time from 2 different IP addresses. As one member or 2 different members.

Finally, at work I have a static IP address. An internet IP address that never changes. My work location is in Daytona Beach. I can post from anywhere in the world, with an internet connection, from my Daytona Beach IP address.

The IP logged tool at this site is an average tool for the mods to use. There are many flaws with that utility. I can very easily post under a second user name and the mods would NEVER be any the wiser.

I agree frank. It's not an exact science that's for sure. I think the thing is that even if 8 names are in the same condo or apartment (building) then it is still pretty likely that it's not 8 different people all here posting within minutes. He also (and some forget) was doing things like posting his email (more than once) when he was told not to in all sports and he agreed and understood that. Monte HAS TO cover his bases and stop people from trying to bring others elsewhere. People have used PM'S (Now disabled) and email here many times to try and undermind this site by feeding of it's popularity to benefit their sites and so on. His picks have still been posted here since he left so i really don't see the big deal in it all.

Wayne, in no way am I defending anyone. That was not the purpose of this threads. However for BC to post only one person can post from one IP address. that is an incorrect statement.

The purpose of this thread is to educate BC and/or you regarding this IP issue. There seems to be some misconceptions. I considered emailing this to Monte. It was not intended to show other users to circumvent the rules of this forum.

That is partially true and partially not true.

I also have a cable modem and also have a router that has several computers using the same connection.

It is true that all my computers have the same IP when I use the computer and that it isnt static.

What isnt true is that the entire number of the IP does not change, what usually changes is the last sequence of numbers.

So if you had 255.15.20.130 then I have found through many discussions with the cable support and looking online for other reasons that the first 3 portions of the 4 dont change, but the last might and usually does quite often.

I think when BC says someone has the same IP, he might not be saying it is the full sequence that is the same. The odds that someone living in the same appt complex that comes to bettorschat isnt all that high though. I dont know of many folks from the general PHX area that are members here, and there are 5+ million people living here..

You are correct. Often, the only numbers that will change is the last series of numbers.

Using your example of 255.15.20.130
The 255.15.20. will always remain the same.

The 130 number will often change.

There are some exceptions. Large ISP will have multiple IP address that their server will assign.

I can tell you for a fact that I have comcast and my IP # never changes. I also have montired 100's of IP #'s from my sites and caught many people with the exact same IP #. Some companies may rotate the last few digits, but from my experience if its DSL or Cable then it doesn't change.

There are many ways to release an IP address. I really think this is what we need to be making public knowledge on BC....
AOL is the best at changing IP addresses, actually each time you sign on.
So lets give the assholes more ways to find their way back here..
As you can see what went on here today, the assholes don't need the knowledge to change their IP....
