  • Seattle trades Garcia to White Sox

Seattle, WA - Seattle traded right-handed pitcher Freddy Garcia and catcher Ben Davis to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. In exchange, the Mariners acquired catcher Miguel Olivo and minor leaguers Jeremy Reed and Mike Morse.

The move, which was made during Seattle's afternoon game against San Diego, strengthens a White Sox pitching staff that ranks ninth in the American League in ERA. The acquisition gives Chicago a potent 1-2 pitching rotation as the team already has ace Esteban Loaiza on its staff.

"It's a shock for me (being traded)," said Garcia. "It's hard to leave this place. I got to go do my job. It's a good thing to have one of your best friends the manager. I think it's going to be fun." Garcia is 4-7 with a 3.20 ERA on the season in 15 starts. For his career, the 29-year-old has a 76-50 mark with a 3.89 ERA in 169 starts, which includes nine complete games and four shutouts.

The two-time All-Star, who has spent his first six seasons in Seattle, had his best season in 2001 when he went a career-best 18-6 with an American League- leading 3.05 ERA. During that season, Garcia, who had a personal-best four complete games, also led the AL with 238 2/3 innings pitched and struck out 163 batters while walking only 69.

Davis, who has spent most of this year in the minor leagues, is hitting only .091 with two RBI in 14 games this season. For his career, which also included a four-year stint with San Diego, Davis is hitting .237 with 32 homers and 188 RBI.

Olivo is batting .270 with seven homers and 26 RBI in 46 games this year. He homered for the White Sox in Sunday's win over the Chicago Cubs. The 25-year- old Olivo has a career average of .245 with 14 homers and 58 RBI in three seasons.

The 23-year-old Reed, who was named the Minor League Player of the Year in 2003, was hitting .273 with eight homers and 36 RBI while playing center field for Triple-A Charlotte.

Morse, a 22-year-old shortstop, batted .287 with 11 home runs and 38 RBI for Double-A Birmingham.
