  • Rams officially release Warner

(good for Warner..I hope he takes another job and does well)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Rams have officially released two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner.

It had been speculated for a little over a month that Warner's days in St.

Louis were numbered, but the Rams had to wait until at least June 1 because of his salary. Warner will now only cost the team $4.6 million against the salary cap this year and $6.7 million in 2005, rather than $9.5 million had he been released prior to that date.

The release of Warner paves the way for the quarterback to sign with another team, which is likely to be the New York Giants. New York acquired quarterback Eli Manning in the 2004 NFL Draft and then released signal caller Kerry Collins on April 28, leaving the Giants in need of a veteran quarterback to mentor Manning.

Warner seems to be a logical fit in the Big Apple to help ease Manning's transition from college to the pros.

Warner, who burst on to the NFL scene during the 1999 season, was voted the MVP of Super Bowl XXXIV. After a career under the radar in the Arena Football League, Warner threw for 414 yards in the 23-16 victory over Tennessee in January of 2000.

The Rams also reached the Super Bowl two years later with Warner guiding the high-powered offense, but St. Louis lost to New England.

Various injuries over the last couple of seasons have pushed Warner in and out of the starting lineup for the Rams, leading to his permanent benching this past campaign in favor of Marc Bulger.

Warner opened the 2003 season as the starter, but fumbled six times in the 23-13 loss to the New York Giants and it was learned after the game that he had played with a concussion sustained early in the contest.

Bulger started the following week and never relinquished the job.

The Rams paid Warner a $6 million roster bonus last off-season despite his injury-plagued 2002 campaign, during which he threw 11 interceptions and only three touchdowns.

Warner, who will turn 33 later this month, played just three games last season. He completed only 38-of-65 passes for 365 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

In parts of six NFL seasons, Warner has completed 66.4 percent of his passes for 14,447 yards with 102 touchdowns and 65 interceptions.

His 1999 season was one of the best in NFL history, as he finished with a rating of 109.2, throwing for 4,353 yards with 41 touchdowns and just 13 interceptions.

In 2001, he threw for 4,830 yards with 36 touchdowns and 22 picks.
