I was fortunate enough this past weekend to get invited on a trip to the new "D" casino on Frontier street in Vegas and had a great time. The CEO's name is Derek Stevens and has Michigan ties. He also operates several other casinos downtown including the Golden Gate right down the street. If you are unfamiliar with downtown The D is the old Fitzgerald's property and Stevens recently purchased the property and renovated the building and did a masterful job doin so. The old Fitz was a dump and this place is a very nice looking building now.
I have, as many of the others on this sight, been to Vegas quite often and usually stay on the strip. I know downtown Vegas and Frontier Street have kind of a stigma in people's minds, but Stevens has done a great job marketing his new property and changing the "downtown prejudices" of Las Vegas. Although it is a small building in stature comparatively to some of the strip hotel/casinos, it can be described in one word: fun. The entire weekend was first class and I had my best trip to southern Nevada this weekend by far.
Stevens chartered a Boeing 747 flight out of Detroit with Atlas Air. The plane was gorgeous and had between 150 and 200 guests from Michigan on the flight. I was fortunate enough to get invited by a friend of mine who is closely associated with Derek and used to actually work in Las Vegas. Once we were on the ground at McCarron, Mr. Stevens had a fleet of limousines on the tarmack ready to take us to the casino about 2 minutes after we stepped off the plane. Once there, check in was flawless and we were in our rooms immediately. He had events set up for the guests throughout the weekend, inlcuding a shopping trip for the wives, breakfast, lunch and dinner all weekend(great food), a grand opening concert Friday and Saturday night on Frontier Street and a beautiful parting gift for all the guests of Mr. Stevens. Sports viewing was a great experience inside The D as well as he installed a monster bar on the ground level callled "The Longbar" with about 20-25 big screen televisions set up behind the bar. It didn't hurt either that the Michigan guests were able to enjoy 2 great Tigers victories vs. the Yankees on Saturday and Sunday along with (gasp) a Lions victory at Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon as well. What a great time!
The moral of the story is that from this point forward, I will make a concerted effort to stay downtown when I go to Las Vegas. Mr. Stevens showed me enough this past weekend that I just can't bring myself NOT to stay at one of his properties. His staff was kind, efficient, and he has appeared to do everything in his power to make his guests at The D have the most enjoyable time possible while staying at his casino(s). I will definitely be back, without a shadow of a doubt. The place was jam packed all weekend and everyone I ran into and witnessed was a havin a phenomenal time, whether they were killing it at the tables or not. I want to thank everyone who was involved in my trip this weekend and look forward to making it back in the very, very near future. If you are planning a stay out there soon you should certainly check it out.
