  • Prayers and suggestions needed

Hi guys, its been awhile. I wish i was here with some better news. I coach a high school football team and yesterday was the 1st day of practice. During our 2nd practice of the day we had a kid collapse and ultimately pass away shortly afterwards. Please say your prayers for this young man and his family and his teammates that had to witness this. Also i was wondering if anyone may have an idea or two on wat we can do for a tribute to him throughout the season.

    Thanks
    Ray

Damn man so sorry to hear this.Nothing could be worse than this.I know there was nothing u could have done.I referee football and try my best to give an extra water break here and there and some kids never ever have problems while others have a lot harder time.I have had players hurt and airlifted to the hospital and its the most helpless feeling in the world.U always question what u could have done.If I had blown an early whistle or anything.I know u are hurting way worse than anyone could imagine.Just remember its not your fault. You have the responsibility to make sure every player is ready for the seasoThere is a fine line between getting kids ready and pushing to far.Sorry again how are the parents taking it.

That sucks and just guessing, but it was a arrhythmia problem? Been there myself will more luck. As for a way to pay tribute to him for the season put his player # on stretch bands for players to wear on their arms. Also maybe some kind of plaque above the locker room door to touch on the way out to play etc.

That's horrible news coach. I know here in Georgia we had a player in our county die at practice last year and up on the scoreboard at the stadium they put his number up on the Home score and the Visitors score and let it stay on 24 hours a day for probably 5 days. That was pretty awesome!!

Thats horrible... That happened about 4 years ago to a HS that is 20 minutes away from me. It was in an actual game. Some people said they were never attending another HS football game ever again. It was bad.

Coach sorry to hear this just terrible when something like this takes place which unfortunately seems to be more regular in high school football. An idea to honor him might be to have a different player wear his number for every game this season. There is also the usual patch on the jersey that most teams will do in a similar situation

IDK what kind of tribute they did for that kid. It happened at Sullivan South High School in Tennessee. I searched it on the web and nothing came up, maybe you can find something.

                  Coach,
I was a high school football and baseball coach for over 20 years and fortunately I have never been involved in something this tragic. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and his teammates and coaches.
This is something that you can never prepare for.
You coaches need to be strong for the team and for the young mans family.
I got chills when I read this and you come to realize how fragile life is. Be strong buddy.

We had a young man pass away last year at one of the schools near me and what they did was wear his initials on the left chest of the jerseys. That was a symbol that the young man was close to their heart. Just something I felt was very touching.

Again, my prayers go out to all.

Thoughts and prayers out to you, your team, and the families impacted by this tragedy.

See if your offensive or defensive coordinator could change some of the offensive or defensive plays to include Daniel in the name of the play. We did this in high school (when we took salt tablets for our 2 a days) many years ago, and it worked well.

                    Best of luck coach.

Horrible news Coach. I saw it on the local news. Daniel playing for the Red Devils. Reports saying he told his teammates he was having chest pains but he wanted to finish practice. My heart goes out to him and his family.

                            Hi Coach,

such sad news. I have been coaching basketball for over 25 years. We had a student commit suicide several years ago. It devestated our team as they were all close to the student. The best thing we did was let the kids gather in a group and just talk or just sit. We also let them come up with the tribute. All of our ideas are great but the tribute is not only for the player and his family but also to help others grieve. Let your players have a say in what you want to do.

Just some thought. Anything you do will be heartfelt and great

Thoughts and prayers go out to you, your staff, the family and players. Nothing easy about it. We have a family run sporting goods business servicing leagues and schools and would like to help. Been around this before and can only imagine how tough it is. If appropriate to you and your staff, I would like to donate helmet award stickers with that young mans number on them for all your team to wear this upcoming season in his honor.
