    A week of rain brought on floods that have devastated parts of northeastern Brazil. So far, 26 people have been confirmed dead in the state of Alagoas and 12 in the state of Pernambuco, while 1,000 are reported missing. The floods have also wiped out entire towns, forcing 100,000 people to flee their homes.

    Defense Minister Nelson Jobim traveled to Alagoas and Pernambuco to see the emergency measures being taken, including the construction of field hospitals. Alagoas and Pernambuco's governors also traveled to reassure their citizens that aid was on the way. With the help of the military and navy, rescue teams have taken some people out of the most devastated areas by helicopter.

    Brazilian media conglomerate Globo reports that São Paulo and the state of Rio Grande do Sul have already sent planes with food, medicine, blankets and other necessities to Alagoas. However as the rain continues, experts predict it will be increasingly difficult to deliver supplies.
