At about 8:15 a.m. near 65th Street and King Drive, the guard with Digby Security intervened in a domestic dispute over custody of the boy in the gated parking lot of a subsidized housing complex, police said.

The security guard claimed self-defense and witness accounts of the incident matched the description of the incident although police were not able to talk to the man before he died, police said.

About 10:50 a.m. on Monday, a 16-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh as he was taking out garbage on the South Side.

The shooting happened on the 6700 block of South Clyde Avenue, according to police News Affairs. The boy told police he was taking out the garbage when he heard shots and felt pain. He then realized he had suffered a single gunshot wound to the right thigh. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition.

When police responded to a call of a shooting Monday night on the Southwest Side, they found several people bound and one man critically shot in a home invasion. One suspect was being interviewed by police, who were also seeking two others.

Police responded to the 3500 block of West 76th Street at 5:57 p.m. and found multiple men bound. A man in his 20s was also found shot and taken to Christ Medical Center in critical condition. He was shot in the chest, side and buttock, police said.

Several people -- some of them related -- were found with their hands tied behind their backs, and police believe the motive was robbery.

A man and a woman were walking in an alley when both were shot on the Southwest Side Monday night. The shooting happened in the 5800 block of South Francisco Avenue at 10:13 p.m., police said.

A man in his 20s said he was "minding his business" while walking in an alley when he heard people shouting gang slogans and then fire multiple shots, police said. He was shot in the buttock but refused medical treatment.

Suspected robber shot, killed at Northwest Side pawnshop

        June 9, 2010

        Sun-Times Media Wire
A convicted felon was shot to death as he tried to rob a Northwest Side pawnshop Tuesday afternoon -- the third incident involving a citizen shooting an assailant in the city in the past two weeks.

The man killed was identified as Michael McMillan, 24, of the 300 block of North Menard Avenue, according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. McMillan was pronounced dead at Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center at 1:17 p.m., the spokesman said.

The slain suspect was convicted in 2006 of armed robbery and sentenced to boot camp, court records show.

Police sources said the owner of Fullerton Pawners Inc. shot the robber at about 1 p.m. inside the store. Two accomplices, one wearing a black backpack, ran away. One may have been wounded, sources said.

Police have recovered a revolver they believe the slain robber was wielding, sources said.

Joseph Barats, president of the store on the 5900 block of West Fullerton Avenue, declined comment. On a YouTube video, Barats said the store is family-owned. He took over the business about five years ago, he says in the video.

“We have the nicest stuff,” he says. “We are like the real pawn stars. Every day something is happening here.”

Police were reviewing video of the incident, taken from a surveillance camera in the store, sources said.

Detectives also were interviewing witnesses Tuesday night to determine if any charges should be brought against the shooter -- including charges involving the city’s handgun ban.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule this month on the constitutionality of Chicago’s longstanding ban. Already, members of the gun lobby have pointed to two earlier incidents as reasons to lift it.

On June 3, a 27-year-old South Austin man shot and wounded a man who jumped through the window of a home as he was running away from police officers during a drug bust. And on May 26, an 80-year-old Korean War veteran shot and killed a suspected burglar at his home in East Garfield Park. The veteran was robbed at gunpoint last year, his family said.

                • I can just imagine Mayor Dicky sitting in his office and one of his staff brings him a newspaper and he reads 50 shooting in 5 days ... He says, THIS CAN'T BE ... everyone can not be shot by a shotgun ... we banned all handguns ... so people must be shot with shotguns ...

                  What a fvken idiot ...

Murder is against the law isn't it?? ... but you expect these criminals to abide to the gun ban?? ... it is a joke ...

                  Common sense to me ...

                  • BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says North Dakota's crime rate dropped slightly last year, but the number of violent crimes rose.

A new report on Tuesday provides North Dakota statistics for a number of crimes, including murder, aggravated assault and rape. It includes burglary, car thefts and other types of property crimes.

Stenehjem says the state's per-capita crime rate dropped 1.1 percent from 2008 to 2009. The number of offenses reported by local law enforcement agencies fell from 12,850 to 12,822.

The number of violent crimes rose 8 percent. Aggravated assaults rose 7.7 percent. In Devils Lake alone, the number of aggravated assaults jumped from 10 in 2008 to 28 last year.

Statewide, the number of murders increased from four to 15

                    • Daley says he will not run for re-election: 'It's time'

Mayor Richard Daley says he will not run for re-election in 2011, saying it's "time for me, it's time for Chicago to move on."

"The truth is I have been thinking about this for the past several months," Daley said at a City Hall news conference. "In the end this is a personal decision, no more, no less."

His wife Maggie stood by his side with the help of a crutch, smiling broadly as the mayor continued: "I have always known that people want you to work hard for them. Clearly, they won't always agree with you. Obviously, they don't like it when you make a mistake. But at all times, they expect you to lead, to make difficult decisions, rooted in what's right for them.

"For 21 years, that's what I've tried to do," he said. "But today, I am announcing that I will not seek a 7th term as mayor of the city of Chicago.

"Simply put, it's time," said Daley, 68. "Time for me, it's time for Chicago to move on."

                      Mayor
Richard Daley rings in the new school year this morning at Wells
Community Academy High School. Hours later, he announced he would not
seek another term. (E. Jason Wambsgans/ Chicago Tribune).

The mayor said that "improving Chicago has been the ongoing work of my life and I have loved every minute of it. There has been no greater privilege or honor than serving as your mayor.

"Working alongside seasoned professionals, incredibly committed business and community leaders, and some of the most dedicated public employees you will ever expect, I have had the opportunity to expand, to build, to create, unite and compromise for the betterment of Chicago."

Daley spoke for less than five minutes and took no questions.

His decision comes as Maggie continues to battle cancer. In March,
she underwent surgery to strengthen a leg damaged by cancer and the
                      resulting treatment.

The city's first lady has been battling metastatic breast cancer since
2002. In December, the mayor announced his wife would use a wheelchair
to get around while undergoing radiation treatment for a cancerous bone
                      tumor on her right leg.

Daley's decision not to run again sets off a major power scramble following
more than 20 years of stifled political ambitions in city politics.

Daley was first elected mayor in 1989 following a failed bid in 1983. The mayor won re-election every four years since then, always with little to no opposition.

But Daley's public approval rating had dipped recently, with a Tribune poll earlier this summer showing that more than half of Chicago voters said they don't want to see him re-elected.

The poll found only 37 percent of city voters approve of the job Daley is doing as mayor, compared with 47 percent who disapprove. Moreover, a record-low 31 percent said they want to see Daley re-elected, compared with 53 percent who don't want him to win another term.

The mayor's administration has been buffeted by a spate of summer violence, a weak economy and a high-profile failure to land the 2016 Olympics. Dissatisfaction abounds, the survey found, over Daley's handling of the crime problem, his efforts to rein in government corruption and his backing of a controversial long-term parking meter system lease.

A few aldermen are shopping themselves around as potential candidates, and some politicians with broader political bases have been glad to see their names tossed into the ring -- but none had shown a willingness to challenge Daley.

Among aldermen discussed as potential mayoral candidates are Robert Fioretti, 2nd; Sandi Jackson, 7th; Thomas Allen, 38th; Scott Waguespack, 32nd; Brendan Reilly, 42nd; and Thomas Tunney, 44th.

Earlier this year, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel voiced his mayoral ambitions. But the former North Side congressman quickly added that he wouldn't take on Daley, for whom he served as a strategist and fundraiser in the mayor's first winning bid. Likewise, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said he won't run for mayor unless the office is open.

Outgoing Cook County Assessor James Houlihan, by contrast, was considered a potential candidate whether or not Daley runs again. Former Chicago Inspector General David Hoffman also has been mentioned, but he just lost a grueling Democratic U.S. Senate primary.

Killer Swan Blamed for Man's Drowning

Killer Swan Blamed for Man's Drowning An angry swan is being blamed for knocking a man out of his kayak in a Chicago pond and then continuing to attack until the man drowned.

Anthony Hensley, 37, used the swans to keep geese away from properties and was in a kayak checking on the animals Sunday morning when one of the swans swam at him, causing him to fall out of his kayak into the water.

The swan reportedly continued to chase Hensley after he fell into the water, and by the time rescuers arrived he had drowned, The Chicago Sun Times reports.

Investigators believe Hensley had traveled too close to the swan or swan's nesting area, prompting the attack. Family and friends are puzzled.

"Maybe he didn't fight back enough when the swan attacked him," said father-in-law George Koutsogiannis. "Maybe he didn't want to hurt the animal. I can't understand how this was possible."

A memorial fund has been established in Hensley's name, who was a married father of two. Donations can be sent to Amy Hensley, c/o Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave. Villa Park, IL 60181.

                              • 1 killed, 8 hurt in separate shootings

                                By William Lee

                                Tribune reporter

                                6:38 a.m. CDT, May 28, 2012
A 35-year-old man was fatally shot and at least eight other injured in separate overnight shootings across the city.

The shootings, which occurred between late Sunday and this morning, continued a streak of shootings that occurred during the warm Memorial Day weekend. So far this year, the city has had more homicides and shooting incidents over the same period last year, according to the most recent citywide crime statistics.

In the fatal shooting, the victim was struck in the chest at about 1:20 a.m. in an alley in the 5000 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue in the Bronzeville neighborhood, police said.

The victim, Robert McNear, of the 7100 block of South Eberhart Avenue, was later pronounced dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Authorities had few details, but police recovered multiple .45-caliber shell casings at the scene in a shooting they said appeared gang-related.

A 25-year-old man was shot in the head at about 2:30 a.m. in the 1700 block of East 54th Street in the East Hyde Park neighborhood, police said. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition.

Early reports indicated the shooting may have occurred among a large group of revelers all congregated in the area, police said.

About 20 minutes later, a young couple was shot inside a car in the 600 block of West 124th Street in the West Pullman neighborhood, police said. The 25-year-old woman and 26-year-old man were sitting in an auto when a man in a dark hooded sweatshirt began quarreling with the man before he pulled a handgun, police said.

The couple's vehicle drove off, but both victims were wounded in the chest. They drove themselves to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island, where the woman was listed in critical condition and the man in "stable" condition.

Earlier in the evening, a 24-year-old man was shot in the cheek in the 4700 block of North Central Park Avenue, in the Albany Park neighborhood, just before 1:30 a.m. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in stable condition.

At about 1:10 a.m., a woman in her 30s was wounded in the 7800 block of South Sangamon Street in the Gresham neighborhood. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in an unknown condition.

A 23-year-old man said he was crossing the street in the 7500 block of South Colfax Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood at about 12:43 a.m. when he heard a gunshot and felt pain in his back, police said. His cousin took him to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center for treatment.

Earlier in the night, a 19-year-old man was wounded in the torso in the 4200 block of South State Street at 9 p.m. The man was initially taken to John H. Stroger Hospital in critical condition, but police expect him to survive.

Also on late Sunday night, a woman suffered a graze wound to her head in the 1100 block of East 43rd Street at about 11 p.m., police said. The 33-year-old victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment, police said.

Early reports indicated that the victim may have been wounded during a "shooting crossfire," though police couldn't immediately confirm that claim this morning.
