  • Discovery Channel: 'Deadliest Catch' captain dies

Wed Feb 10, 1:51 am ET

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Phil Harris, the fishing boat captain whose adventures off the Alaska coast were captured on the television show "Deadliest Catch", has died, the Discovery Channel said Tuesday night. He was 53.

Harris suffered what his family described as a massive stroke on Jan. 29 while the fishing vessel he captained, Cornelia Marie, was in port at St. Paul Island, Alaska. The fisherman was flown to Anchorage for surgery.

The reality show, which has filmed five seasons, has been one of the Discovery Channel's most popular and depicts the crab fishing industry in the dangerous waters off Alaska.

"It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad - Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end," sons Josh and Jake Harris said in a statement released by the network. "For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down."

In a statement, Discovery Channel senior vice president Elizabeth Hillman says, "Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him."

"We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart," she said.

In an e-mail to The Associated Press, she said no additional information was immediately available Tuesday night.

Harris had seemed to be improving, and in a posting last Saturday on the ship's Web site, he was described as "talking to friends and family today; showing his greatest progress" since the stroke.

His sons wrote in a Feb. 3 posting that "No one ever said Captain Phil Harris wasn't tough. Today, dad showed some good signs of improvement, squeezing our hands and even summoning his trademark Captain's bluntness ... We are encouraged but still very cautious."

According to the ship's Web site, Harris started working on fishing boats at age 7 and started work 10 years later on a crab boat. When Harris turned 21, he ran a fishing vessel out of Seattle, making him one of the youngest to captain a vessel in the Bering Sea.

When Harris suffered the stroke, the family said a friend, Derek Ray, had flown to St. Paul to take over the role of relief skipper for the rest of the opilio crab season.

Harris' fishing vessel was based in Seattle.

'Deadliest Catch': The Five Things We'll Miss Most About Captain Phil
By Dave Nemetz | Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 1:11 PM

Captain Phil Harris and sons Jake and Josh
Discovery Channel/Rick Gershon/Getty ImagesAnyone who says reality TV is all fluff never met Captain Phil Harris. The tough-as-nails star of Discovery's crab-fishing reality hit "Deadliest Catch," Harris spent six seasons risking his life on the Bering Sea in search of precious Alaskan crabs. Sadly, Harris passed away in February at age 53 from complications after suffering a stroke while offloading crabs from his boat, the Cornelia Marie.

The last six years of Harris' life have been lived on camera, and his death was no different. For three weeks, the "Deadliest Catch" cameras have captured the heartwrenching final days of Harris' life, and tonight, he finally loses his battle, surrounded by family and friends. After the episode, the follow-up show "After the Catch" has crew members and fans paying tribute to their fallen leader. In that spirit, here are the five things we'll miss most about good ol' Captain Phil.

                His Toughness

Phil Harris was a cranky, grizzly bear of a man; he's like the tough-but-tender uncle we all wish we could toss a football with. Crab fishing is not for the weak of heart, and with 32 years as a crab fisherman, Phil proved himself to be tougher than any UFC fighter. We'll always remember his immortal quote: "You ain't a man till you pull a tooth out with a pair of pliers." Indeed — and next to Phil, very few of us are men.

                His Sense of Humor

Navigating a crab boat through frigid Arctic waters…it's not exactly a laugh riot. But Phil always kept the mood light with his trademark zingers and putdowns. Plus, who could forget his undying obsession with crab farts? The man insisted that he could smell out a herd of crabs with just a whiff of their flatulence. If a grown man sniffing out crab farts (and enjoying it) isn't funny, we don't know what is.

                His Way With His Sons

Phil's sons, Josh and Jake, served with their dad as deckhands aboard the Cornelia Marie. Phil clearly loved them, and loved getting the opportunity to spend time with them on the sea. But as the boat's captain, he treated his boys just as harshly as he would any other crew member. And it worked, because at the time of Phil's death, Josh and Jake were ready to take over. That's the best gift he could give them.

                His Everyman Appeal

We love a hard worker, and nobody worked harder than Phil. Growing up in Seattle, he began fishing with his father at age 7 and went to work as a crab fisherman right after high school. He became a crab fishing boat captain at the tender age of 21, and spent more than 20 years as captain of the Cornelia Marie, putting his life on the line every crab season. Just remember that the next time you enjoy a nice, juicy crab leg.

                His Openness

No, we wouldn't call Phil a touchy-feely guy — but he did open up his life, warts and all, to us each week. And we're so glad he did. Phil helped make "Catch" the highest rated show on Discovery; the last two episodes netted more than 5 million viewers each (a phenomenal number for a cable-channel show). And thankfully, Discovery is giving us a chance to say our final goodbyes. Go to Discovery.com for a live chat with fellow "Catch" fans, and watch tonight to see Captain Phil get the sendoff he deserves.
