  • New Poll-Which Athlete Would You Like to Be?

Here is one which should get your guys to think:
If you HAD to(not would you) change your life for that of any athlete either living or dead since 1900, who would that athlete be and why?
Remember when you choose, you are not only considering what the person accomplished/has accomplished as an athlete but his/her entire past or present life outside of sports.
eg. Some might choose Wilt Chamberlain because besides being a great basketball player, he had sex with a zillion women. lol

The fact that I chose a Red Sox player won't surprise many, but who I choose may.
No it is not Lowell, Varitek, Yaz, Ted Williams, Nomar, Pedro, Manny, Dwight Evans, etc.
Instead it is a former good player player on Red Sox who is still with the Red Sox in another capacity.
If you guessed Jerry Remy or Eckersley, you are on the right track (and they did receive consideration) but wrong.
                My choice is Johnny Pesky!
First of all,he had a very good career most of which was spent with the Sox(lifetime batting average 307)-sure he held the ball too long in ther 1946 WS deciding game, but well, we all make errors in judgment, and that doesn't detract from his fine career.
He also managed the Sox for and was a coach, batting instructor and wasused in many other capacities during his long career(he tried announcing and doing analysis but was not particularly good at it).
Most importantly he has spent 58 of his 70 years in baseball doing something for the Sox, which is his passion in life;to this day he can still be seen helping out in the dugout before games doing something.
Because of his longevity he is sometimes called "Mr. Red Sox;" he even had his number retired, a rarity with the Sox.
In addition and very importantly, he is also 90 years old and still going strong.
Being the Sox diehard I am, thinking about his/my being able to play for the Sox, still being able to remain with the team after his playing days were over and still being alive and healthy at 90 seems pretty nice to me-that is why he is the guy I would trade places with if forced to make that decision.
