  • Guns at Work Passes Fla Senate

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Reuters) - Most Florida residents would be allowed to take guns to work under a measure passed by Florida lawmakers on Wednesday.

The bill, allowing workers to keep guns in their cars for self-protection, was approved by the Florida Senate by a vote of 26-13. It now goes to Republican Gov. Charlie Crist to sign into law.

[B]Backed by the National Rifle Association and some labor unions, the so-called "take-your-guns-to-work" measure would prohibit business owners from banning guns kept locked in motor vehicles on their private property{B]

The measure applies to employees, customers and those invited to the business establishment as long as they have a permit to carry the weapon.

Backers say the measure upholds the vision of the authors of the U.S. Constitution, who made the right to bear arms part of the Bill of Rights.

"The second thing they wrote about in that constitution was the right to bear arms," said Sen. Durell Peaden, a Republican from Crestview, Florida. "It was what was dear in their hearts."

The measure exempts a number of workplaces including nuclear power plants, prisons, schools and companies whose business involves homeland security.

Critics say the measure usurps business owners' rights to determine what happens on their property and puts workers and managers at risk from disgruntled employees.

Dozens of workplace shootings occur every year in the United States and studies have shown that job sites where guns are permitted are more likely to suffer workplace homicides than those where guns are prohibited.

NOW---THIS IS WHERE IT CONFUSES ME!

Oklahoma, Alaska, Kentucky, and Mississippi have similar laws, although in Oklahoma, an appellate court barred the state from enforcing the legislation on grounds that it was unconstitutional.

Florida business groups are urging the governor to veto the measure, saying owners should be allowed to determine what happens on their property.

"We are disappointed that politics clearly won over good policy," Mark Wilson, president and chief executive of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement.

If "Disgruntled Employees" want to go and shoot people they will. They will find ways to sneak in guns.

Now the rest of the employees have a fighting chance against those crazy asses.

Believe me, I would have at least a dozen "shooting awards" and metals hanging on my office wall. I would give those "disgruntled employees" something to think about before they start shooting around me!!!

I believe we have the right to bear arms to protect ouselves and property. If an employee is not right in the mind or if drug or alcohol induced rage occurs then it is how fast can I get to safety or get to my gun. Va Tech and so many other places have revealed the volatility of would be shooters and the vulnerability of innocent lives.
I would of course caution against just any use unless you are threatened and the life you save may be your own.
Our responsibility is not to become avengers and heros but rather take up a defensive stance at all times against armed ass holes who care little of what happens to themselves or the people he shoots.

Doesn't Florida have a gun permit where you can carry a concealed weapon?

Yes they do, and that's not all. Under Florida law, there is no "duty to retreat" if you are attacked in any place you have a lawful right to be. Instead, you may stand your ground and meet force with force, including deadly force, if you reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm to yourself or others.

There was even a sign on interstate 75 South just outside of Tampa warning people coming into the State that Florida residents are armed and have the right to protect themselfs.

So what's this new law about then? If they can carry a concealed weapon then I see no reason why they can't have a gun in there car as long as the ammo is in the truck with the gun in the car or vice versa.

I think the way it works is if the place has a sign up not permitting you to carry a gun even concealed then you can't. I'm just not sure what all the complaining is regarding these people carrying a gun in their car. It's legal to carry a gun in your car with the gun not being loaded and the ammo in the trunk, because how else can you get to a shooting range? Of course unless you buy the ammo at the range and use it all there.

Here in Louisiana, we can carry guns in our cars ... loaded and concealed. Our vehicles are considered extensions of our home.

We also have concealed handgun permits available.
