Up to 30 are missing. More than likely I am assuming that means dead.

            How brutal is this?

People pinned and dying in the wreckage of the Interstate 35W bridge Wednesday night asked rescue workers to say their goodbyes to their families, Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan said.

More details are emerging about the frantic minutes and hours after the collapse of the bridge that spanned the Mississippi River and the harrowing choices rescue workers had to make.

"There's people pinned, severely injured. We couldn't move them. It was an obviously dangerous situation with stuff still falling." Dolan said. "The decision was made to leave them."

"People who were pinned or partly crushed told emergency workers to say 'hello' or say 'goodbye' to their loved ones," he said.

Dolan said recovery of wreckage and bodies continues today.

"We have all the license plate numbers of cars we can see. Divers are trying to collect from those underwater," Dolan said.

Authorities estimate as many as 50 vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the collapse.

According to Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek, divers entered the water about noon to examine four submerged cars between the collapsed sections of the bridge.

Officials have not updated the number of the dead and injured late this morning.

Late Wednesday, seven people were reported dead, an estimated 20 to 30 were missing and more than 60 were injured, authorities said. This morning officials lowered the number dead to four, but said they expect the death toll to rise as the search effort

If they are missing, they are dead. That is unbelievable. How does a bridge 40 years old just fall down

Pistons coach Flip Saunders was nearly on a bridge when it collapsed yesterday in Minneapolis, but a construction detour may have saved his life.
"I usually take the 35W bridge, but the ramp was closed," Saunders said Thursday. "My daughter was driving in a car right behind me when the bridge collapsed — about 20 yards away from us. It sounded like a bomb when it dropped," he continued. "I got out of my car and the first thing I heard was the kids screaming on the bus. I called 911. I didn’t really know what else I could do." Saunders is still struggling with the images of what he witnessed. "A day later, I’m still in a surreal state of mind," he said. "I can still see what happened. It’s kind of like having flashbacks."
