  • Thinking of Relocating

My wife and I have grown tired of the grind of the NY Metropolitan area. We've decided that we're at the point where we'd like something with a little slower pace and an overall lower level of stress.

My wife is an Occupational Therapist and i'm a Corporate Controller for a large company in the Metro Area. We have one daughter about to start kindergarten and one starting nursery school.

We're thinking about the Southeast or the Midwest, although i'm not interested in Florida and I don't want to go somewhere that is colder than NY. I want to make sure we go somewhere with good public schools, within distance of a city where I can get a job at my level and where the cost of housing is somewhat reasonable.

We've basically decided that the hours we're both putting in to maintain a comfortable living in this area just isn't worth it anymore.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be good spots for lifelong New Yorkers to relocate?

I will get ridiculed for this, but i dont care. Louisville is in the top 50 cities to live in the US. Oldham county a suburb of Louisville is one of the best school districts in the state

JC....please don't take this the wrong way. When I take the online surveys that ask about all the things you would like in a place to live, Louisville always ends up in the top 15 for me.

I'm worried about the severe culture shock.

But how would a type-A, short tempered guy from Long Island and a type-A, short tempered Puerto Rican chick from Brooklyn fare in Louisville?

Being from Florida (10 generations), I can empathize on not wanting to move here. The lakes are drying up dramatically and the aquifers are doing overtime for clean water. The immigration is starting to bug the Yorkers/Canucks/Minney-sotians/etc that wish to move here. They still come but after the hurricane season.
A good place that I see alot of is Raleigh NC. South Carolina has a few good places and you can watch Spurrier ball in the fall. Whether you pick Kentucky or any of these states/cities- you may like the bluegrass music over time. Culture shock- yes- pros and cons. Good Luck!

I have been ridiculed relentlessly about being from Kentucky

I try and tell all these a-holes that Louisville is a large city. Trust me, there arent a lot of hicks in Louisville. Out in the state, yes here no.

You would fare fine, Louisville is as laid back a city as you will find. I got a pretty short fuse myself, and i dont have any problems.

Louisville is a big city without all the big city problems, Rick Pitino is a big city guy and when he left Boston he could have went to St Johns or plenty other big city jobs, he chose Louisville cause believe me, its a great place to live

Thanks JC. I would just take a little re-assuring to convince my wife that Louisville would not put us out in the sticks somewhere, but Louisville is back on my list now.

Spearit, I keep hearing about how nice Raleigh is. It also comes up on all the top 20 lists. Thanks. SC is a possiblility as well. I just have to narrow it down to an area.

We get a lot of people move down here (Biloxi) from the Northeast and love it. Most of them are taken back by how different it is from their perception of what they expected. Having said that, we're on the water man, and even though I've been here all my life, I'm thinking about getting away from coastal areas myself. Other than that, the people are great.

It's really humid down here. It takes a lot of getting use to coming from the north. I'm thinkin' about Tennesse myself.

Mule, a few years back I also looked at relocating, and from one high strung LI New Yorker to another, these were the four places I found that had a great job market and was not as big a culture shock.

                Phoenix/Glendale AZ
                Charlotte NC
                Denver CO
                Portland WA
                2012 - 2013 NCAAF

                21 - 20 - 0

                2012 - 2013 NFL

                14 - 10 - 1

Middletown,WI. Winters in Wisconsin are nothing like they
use to be. Finding jobs would be very easy with the resume
that the two of you have. Schools always rate high.

He is looking for a place to live, not slit his throat from boredom!

And Louisville made the list....Louisville, CO!!!!

If I had to do it again, Scottsdale, AZ if you can take the heat would top the list. Denver would have been up there but I here a lot about crime. I hear great things abut Seattle but it would be too far for me.

Being that you are type-A's and it seems like you want a major city (type-A's would not do well on any of the places on this list)...what abour Chicago? Awesome city just cold.
