BATON ROUGE, La.-- A 16-month-old is on life support after being severely beaten.
Authorities say the child's mother, 22-year-old Shaelsie Jason, and the woman's boyfriend, 22-year-old Jeremy Jordan, were booked Monday after doctors at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital discovered the child had a broken leg, rib and bruises all over her body.
Authorities say the little girl -- Ahlayjah Jordan -- was pronounced clinically dead Tuesday afternoon. Doctors say she will die once taken off of life support.
Addis Police Chief Ricky Anderson is calling it the most severe case of child abuse he's seen in his more than 20 years on the force. He says the child had severe abrasions across the forehead, a bruised left eye, a broken right leg that appeared to have been twisted instead of just broke, a broken rib on the right side, fractured skull and liver.
He says Jason brought the toddler to Riverwest Hospital last Thursday night, claiming she had fallen out of a highchair. Forty minutes later, the child was transported to Our Lady of the Lake, where she was placed on life support.
Anderson says detectives believe the abuse happened at Jason's home in Addis. Jason and Jordan were booked with attempted second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.
Anderson says the charges could be upgraded to second-degree murder. The chief says the child will be disconnected from life support when the coroner's office arrives.
The couple has a four-month-old child together. Anderson says it is now in the care of child protective services.
