  • Woman Rescued From Rubbish-Filled Home

WOODMERE, N.Y. -- Volunteer firefighters searching a tidy home in a nice neighborhood on New York's Long Island have found the body of an elderly man buried under piles of rotting garbage, human and animal waste.
The discovery Friday comes a day after an 85-year-old woman was found trapped alive in the house by garbage that had fallen on her.

Officials said debris mixed with human and animal waste was piled up in every room in the house, some of it all the way to the ceiling.
There was garbage "cans, boxes, clothing, papers, whatever you can collect in every room, some spots to the ceiling, some three feet to the ceiling," Erik Kinney, a volunteer firefighter, said. "Feces -- raccoon, possum and human" were found in buckets and in the trash.

Helen Bushwick was found Thursday evening, located by her feet and her moans, when relatives who had been unable to contact her called police.

She was taken to a hospital where she's being treated for dehydration.

Nassau County police said the dead man was Bushwick's brother-in-law.

Officials aren't sure how long the two had been trapped, but neighbors said they hadn't seen them in about a week.
