LOUISVILLE STARTS COUNTDOWN TO RYDER CUP
The city of Louisville is ready to host the 2008 Ryder Cup. A special committee of the Governor of Kentucky and the Mayor of Louisville are hard at work planning the events that will surround the world’s most prestigious golf tournament and an enormous digital clock in the city’s main entertainment district ticks off the hours until the golf fans arrive.
Paul Azinger, a former PGA champion who has played in four Ryder Cup tournaments, has been named U.S. captain of the 2008 Ryder Cup by the PGA of America.
The Ryder Cup, one of professional golf's top international competitions, will be held at Louisville's Valhalla Golf Club, 15503 Shelbyville Road, Sept. 16-21, 2008. The competition matches a team of U.S. golfers against a European team and is held every two years.
The Ryder Cup, which pairs 12 of the top American golfers against 12 of their European counterparts, is expected to draw the highest attendance ever for a sporting event held in Kentucky.
The Ryder Cup is expected to draw more than 210,000 spectators to Valhalla during its six days of practice rounds and competition and reach an estimated economic impact of $115 million in Greater Louisville. More than 25 hours of live coverage is planned, reaching over 545 million viewers in 177 countries. Media credentials will be issued to more than 1,500 reporters and commentators from around the world. The United States last hosted the Ryder Cup in 2004 at Oakland Hills Country Club, near Detroit.

With sell-out performances throughout North America and Europe, The Police have now confirmed a very special performance at Churchill Downs, home of America's premier horse race, the Kentucky Derby. The Police will perform under Churchill Downs' famed Twin Spires the evening of Saturday, July 14.
"Churchill Downs is pleased to welcome The Police to perform at the home of the Kentucky Derby," said Churchill Downs President Steve Sexton. We are delighted to again play host to a major concert event that will bring economic benefit to the city and surrounding communities and possibly establish another major event tradition in Louisville. We are also excited to be working with Live Nation and SMG again, and believe this will be another incredible musical experience set against the backdrop of our world-famous Twin Spires."
