Saving his own life at 80 miles an hour
Man outruns disaster by ‘skimming’ snowmobile across partly frozen lake

    P

    Updated: 8:17 p.m. ET Feb 28, 2007
PORTLAND, Maine - A snowmobile operator who encountered open water while racing across a partially frozen lake saved himself from drowning by accelerating fast enough to glide over the waves for at least a mile. Another rider was missing and presumed dead.

Gary Huntley said he had never ridden a snowmobile over water — a dangerous practice known as "skimming" — but had heard it was possible.

So when the ice on one of Maine's largest lakes abruptly ended during a ride Saturday, Huntley and a companion made a split-second decision to accelerate onto the water.

"I just thought to myself that as long as the sled is moving and I'm sitting on it, I'll be able to breathe and live," he said. "If I end up in the water, I don't have a chance."

It's widely known that snowmobiles can stay afloat for short distances on open water. The trick, riders say, is to maintain speed so that the belt driving the snowmobile becomes something of a paddle wheel. Let off the throttle, riders say, and the snowmobile will sink.

State legislators outlawed skimming in 2003, but game wardens who investigated the incident credited the riders' instincts with saving their lives.

"At least two of them did what was under the circumstances the best thing to do. But what a terrible position to be in," said Bob Meyers, executive director of the Maine Snowmobile Association.

Huntley, 44, of Oxford, estimated he traveled about a mile before reaching safety. Wardens said the distance was at least two miles. A companion, Jonathan Herbster of Bedford, Mass., also survived by traveling a half-mile across the water.

A third rider, Paul Blanco of Carlisle, Mass., was missing and presumed drowned. Divers found his snowmobile in 30 feet of water, but there was no sign of his body.

Earlier that day, the men rode across three other frozen lakes that had no gaps in the ice.

Huntley said he was traveling about 40 mph when he spotted open water ahead. He figured he was already on thin ice and would sink if he stopped. So he gunned the throttle, hitting the water at 80 mph.

It's been on the news up here for days now. They still havn't found the guy. There are many lakes up here and people ride all over them thinking they are frozen. Often, they find patches that are not and fall in. It happens every year. It's 40 degrees out and there are 20 trucks parked out in the middle of the lake while people are ice fishing. It's crazy!

That is insane to me. I like to fish as much as the next guy, but i can wait till spring and fish from a boat. I would be a nervous mess going across a frozen lake on foot, much less a 1500 lb snowmobile.

Poor bastage must have let off the throttle, what a way to die

I probably would have panicked when i saw water ahead and let off too. It's a split decision to save your life i guess. There are a million groomed trails up here to play on but they all love the open lakes where they can open it up.

Another big story this morning was a guy from Maine was found murdered in San Diego. A Truck driver found his head in one area and someone else found his body w/out it across town. His hand was also found in a 3rd location.

The guy in S.D. had been living out there i guess and he was homeless. What a fucked up story though. Why would you spread his body parts all around town?

OK this is a bit of a long story, but interesting...It is 100% true, real life event......

When I was in college, I had a Poly Sci prof named Max Frank. The first day of class I thought this guy was weird but I stayed in the class cuz I needed it to finish my GE courses.

Max would come in every class wearing the same clothes. Brown cordoroy pants and a purple sweater. He also wore a toupe and would let the bobby pins holding it on his head stick out. He talked funny as well.

Well towards the end of the semester, I needed to know what my grade was on a term paper I did. He wouldn't tell me, but said he had the paper and my grade at his home. He says, come to my house and I'll get your grade and bring you back. I needed to know bad before the next class because I was on the verge of not making it in there.

So I agreed to go to his house. We drove in his car. He told me to come into his house with him. Something in my head said DON'T GO IN.....So he was kind of pissed I wouldn't. He went in got my grade and came out.

I ended up with a C in the class.....

After I graduated, about 2 years after taking his class. I was watching the news in Bakersfield when a story came over about a professor that was arrested in Los Angeles for murdering a gay male prostitute.

YES....That professor was Maxy Frank. He endedd up getting convicted and sent to prison for life. What he did was, he got a male prostitute in Los Angeles. After having sex with him, he killed him and took a chain saw and chopped up his body. Threw the parts into a trash bag and dumped it off the freeway. The way he got caught was, he had rented a chain saw from a store in LA. He returned the saw uncleaned with human flesh in it.

Police also found the largest collection of gay pornography ever in the central valley. And he was building a sound proof booth......Sick bastard!

The joke going around at the time was.....How many students does it take to fill a Max Frank class???
