                Six-Pack for Saturday
-- American League teams went 11-3 vs NL squads Friday. Devil Rays, Royals both won easily on the road.
-- Only three parks Barry Bonds has played in but not hit a home run? Kingdome (Seattle), Tropicana (Tampa Bay) and Hiram Bithorn Stadium (San Juan, PR, vs Expos)
-- Of all the parks where Bonds was a visitor, he has hit the most home runs in Qualcomm (San Diego, 39).
-- Canadian Football League started tonight; they've added instant replay for this season. We'll analyze every game on college football page, starting next week.
-- Reds are 37-30 and contending, but when they sign Joe Mays off the scrap heap, it tells you a lot about their staff.
-- Very quietly, Florida Marlins have had solid last 3 weeks; they're 16-6 in their last twenty-two games.

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...............
                  13) Forbes magazine reports the Kansas City Royals turned a $20 million profit last year, which, if true, is greatest argument ever for a salary floor, in which teams would be required to spend so much money on player salaries. It is necessary.

                  12) The Players' Union, in its infinite greed (remember, they're run by scumweasels with no talent, other than to leech off the talent of others), would never agree to it, though, since they see a salary floor as a precursor to a salary cap.

                  11) Padres' reliever Allen Embree has a clause in his contract that pays him a $50K bonus if he is the starting pitcher in the All-Star Game. Embree, in 13th year in big leagues, has 31-33 career record, with eight saves and only four games started.

                  10) Through Thursday, there had been 12,500 strikeouts this season, with 6,620 walks.

                  9) Siena's point guard, Mensah, wants transfer to Duquesne, which is big blow to the Siena program; he is versatile guard who helped sparked Saints' resurgence last winter. The reasons for his transferring were lame (Dukes were 3-24 last year, so not like NBA scouts flock to the Palombo Center) but one of Mensah's best friends is also transferring there.

It is obvious Siena is steaming over losing its point guard, inferring less-than-ethical recruiting. They're threatening to block his transfer, which means the kid could still go there, but not get a scholarship.

                  8) Siena would be in wrong to block the kid from transferring to Duquesne. Coach McCaffery skipped on NC-Greensboro for greener pastures last year and he easily could have done the same thing this year, had he chosen to pursue the job at Penn, his alma mater. No one would have said boo; it is a business, and as more money creeps into it, so do more people turn into creeps. It is a just a fact of life. A sad one.

                  7) June 16 birthdays, actress Joan Van Ark (Knots Landing- 63), boxer Roberto Duran (55), singer Gino Vanelli (54).

                  6) Umpires who, through Thursday's games, have dished out the most walks: Cousins (138), Gibson (126), Poncino (125).

                  5) In August, 2000, Todd Helton hit .476, with 50 hits. 50 hits in 31 days, with one and probably at least two days off.

                  4) Sign that the A's hot streak is being led by great managing of Ken Macha; they scored nine runs Thursday, with a lineup where the DH was batting .054. He's pulled lot of strings over the last ten days, and mostly, has been correct.

                  3) Charlotte Bobcats sold out only seven of 41 home games last year, despite a new arena. With a 44-120 record in their first two seasons, they need to get better; lot of competition for the basketball dollar in the Tar Heel State.

                  2) Not sure signing Michael Jordan to run the basketball operation was brilliant; at some point, people will realize that being the greatest player does not make you good at other aspects of the business. They're just two different jobs.

                  1) For instance, I'm pretty good at driving my car, but don't know how to pop the hood, much less fix anything that goes wrong with the car. I am very good at eating, but can't cook worth a damn. Jordan may be the same way with basketball. Great at playing, average at the other aspects of the business
