    NBA Finals

Right now, with NBA Finals in Miami for three games, the deal is pretty siimple; Shaq gets doubled constantly, so if the player whose man doubles Shaq can't create a play that leads to hoop (Wade's man won't double) then the Heat are dead, and Riley is no smarter than Stan Van Gundy. Right now, the other players for Miami aren't getting it done, and Haslem has a bum shoulder, so defending Dirk gets even dicier. Mavericks have won six of their last seven games, are playing with supreme confidence. in a million years, never would have thought that Erick Dampier is a key player in Dallas winning an NBA title, but he has been

      Six-Pack for Tuesday
-- One reason the Royals stink: Of their top 10 prospects in farm system, none are from Latin America. Until you mine the most fertile areas for talent, you won't win.
-- On certain days, you can go to Anaheim Stadium, and for $39, get four tickets to the game, with four drinks and four hot dogs. In the Bronx, you can barely park the car for $39.
-- Devil Rays' Scott Kazmir has annoyed umpires to point where they squeeze him on pitches; he didn't allow a run in five innings Monday, but threw 98 pitches in five IP, with five full counts. As soon as he left game, the zone widened. Apparently, umpires don't like 22-year olds to complain.
-- Minnesota Golden Gophers are going to get a 50,000-seat outdoor football stadium, on campus, the first new stadium on campus in Big 11 football in over forty years.
-- San Diego State signed a $1.2M deal with Nike, to shoe and clothe 18 of their teams. Deal is for ten years. Included are new football uniforms for the Aztecs, who are coached now by former Iowa QB Chuck Long. .
-- Was weird to read that people who make TV schedules for college hoop games are waiting to see if Pitt 7-footer Aaron Gray goes pro; if he stays in school, we'll see a lot more of the Panthers on TV next winter.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but............
        13) Few years ago, NBA's Bucks traded for Robert (Tractor) Traylor, a large man who had a mediocre at best NBA career; he is still around, on someone's bench. Who did they give up to get the Tractor? Young German lad named Nowitzki. That trade is right up there with Fregosi-for-Ryan and Favre-to-Green Bay as bonehead maneuvers.

        12) How do pro sports teams not have anti-danger clauses in players' contracts? Jayson Williams ruined his hoop career with a bike accident, and Ben Roethlisberger, who had been warned about riding cycle without a helmet (it is illegal in NY, apparently not in PA), has injured himself six weeks before camp opens.

        11) Bottom line for players is this: You get paid ton of money, but with that comes some responsibility, like keeping yourself in one piece and not embarrassing the team . Ride a cycle when you're retired, ironically, the advice Terry Bradshaw gave Big Ben last summer. Some people don't listen.

        10) I am against a law in New York that says all motorcyclists have to wear helmets, but on other hand, it is plain stupid not to wear one. Intelligence shouldn't be legislated, though, because lawmakers have no idea where to stop.

        9) Congrats to former Bears' QB and Albany Firebirds' coach Mike Hohensee, whose Chicago Rush won the Arena Bowl Sunday; he has been in AFL all 20 years, first as player (he threw first AFL TD pass and played in first Arena Bowl, but hadn't been back since), now as a coach. Sat next to coach on Albany-to-Chicago flight in fall of '98; very pleasant guy.

        8) Kris Benson gets start at Shea this weekend, when Orioles come to town. No word if the lovely and formerly talkative Mrs Benson will also be along for the game.

        7) Joe Mauer has reached base 21 times in his last six games; if he played in New York, they'd already be etching his name on a plaque for induction in 2020.

        6) Automobile tip of the day: When you put gas in your car, make sure to tighten cap on the gas tank, or else the "Check Engine" light may come on, and that's something you never want to see, especially at 1am, 25 miles from home.

        5) I fully expect Roger Clemens to make three starts for the Astros, then get named to the NL All-Star team.

        4) Danbury Trashers, a low-minor league hockey team that plays in the UHL (they're rivals with the team Barry Melrose owns in Glens Falls) got snagged for circumventing league's $100,000 salary cap, by hiring wives/girlfriends of players to no-show jobs at sanitation disposal business the Trashers' owner runs. Now there is an excuse to make another Slap Shot movie.

        3) Some baseball statheads don't believe in clutch hitting; they just think it is extension of ordinary at bats, that is, a career .269 hitter will, over time, hit .269 in any situation, given enough at bats.

Well, I love stats and I understand them, but David Ortiz would never bat against my team in a game-winning situation, if I was managing. There is just something about him that says "I will beat you" in big spots.

        2) I'm not the brightest guy in America, but when attendance for Roger Clemens' first minor league start is 9,922, then his next start is 9,022, and his uniform number is 22, I'm not real sold on the validity of those head counts.

        1) I was an official scorer in the Eastern League for two years; one night, the local writers are bugging the owner's brother for an attendance figure to put in the box score for next day's paper. Brother looks at the scoreboard- number 5 is batting, the count is 2 balls, 1 strike, 1 out, so naturally, that night's attendance was 5,211. True story.
