Edmonton, the #8 seed in West, is as unlikely a finalist as could imagine, but they've won seven of nine road games in playoffs so far this spring (5-3 at home). Carolina is 7-2 at home, 4-4 on road in playoffs; both teams have had lot of rest, with Hurricane win over Buffalo in Game 7 Thursday the most recent contest. Oiler D Pringer is averaging 31:54 a game on ice, but with 'canes having eight forwards with 10+ playoff points, he can't be in all places at all times. Edmonton has killed penalties best of anyone in playoffs. Carolina is 6-4 in playoffs when other side scores first, so they have poise, even when behind. Couple of old WHA teams, both of whose coaches once worked for Bruins.

        Six-Pack for Monday
-- ESPN needs less Joe Morgan and more Peter Gammons on its Sunday night telecasts. Gammons is fountain of info; have you ever learned anything listening to Morgan?
-- Dodgers, Arizona emerge as frontrunners to make move for Dontrelle Willis, if Florida wants to move him; those two NL West rivals have the most young talent to make a move.
-- If Iwas Mr Bud Selig, I'd sent Marlins a secret memo, and tell them they're not going to be allowed to trade Willis or Cabrera in, as Bowie Kuhn said, "best interests of baseball"
-- Carl Creawford got hurt when he jumped in air, objecting to horrendous call made at home plate by ump CB Bucknor Thursday. It would be fair if Bucknor was suspended until Crawford was healthy enough to play.
-- Chris Young didn't allow a run in 16 IP this week, winning pair of tense games, 2-0/1-0. Good trade the Padres made.
-- Milwaukee has completely fallen apart, losing their last eight games, as inability of ace Sheets to stay healthy and inneffectiveness of closer Turnbow has crippled staff.

Monday's List of 13: Random thoughts after rainy weekend
            13) Baseball should outlaw the elbow armor hitters wear; it almost totally eliminates fear of getting hit by the ball.

            12) Have to admire Giants' C Eliezer Alfonzo (2-9 since called up from the minors); he has been a minor league catcher for 11 seasons, before finally getting the call to The Show. Takes lot of perseverance to stick with it that long.

            11) Mets should wear their original, all-blue hats more often.

            10) NBC film critic Jeffrey Lyons was once a kicker at Penn.

            9) In 21 of Kansas Ciuty's first 54 games, the starting pitcher didn't finish the fifth inning.

            8) A's were 16-18 with Rich Harden on the DL; now that he is back, would expect their pitching to solidify, but they'll need healthy bullpen (Duchsherer, Kennedy, Witasick) and Street to keep pitching well in order to contend.

            7) Maria Sharapova made $18.2M in endorsements last year, another athlete who outearns the entire Florida Marlin team.

            6) Speaking of the Marlins, they've won nine of last 12 games.

            5) Ryan Howard of Phillies had 13 HR's, 35 RBI, just in May.

            4) Pedro Martinez has allowed just 10 runs in 42 innings in his last six starts, but hasn't won any of the six starts.

            3) Astros are 4-22 in their last 26 games; you think they could have used Roger Clemens on their team the last month?

            2) Clemens will be making starts at tbe A-AA-AAA levels on his way to the Astros, which seems normal enough, until you realize that Clemens is part-owner of both Round Rock and Lexington teams, so he figures to profit from his appearances at those parks. Drayton McLane has to be hoping Astros are still in race on June 22, when Clemens finally makes '06 debut.

            1) Baseball's amateur draft is Tuesday-Wednesday, and no, it isn't on TV, because baseball is run by nitwits, but 50 rounds of players will be drafted over two days, maybe someone you know. The low minor leagues are stocked from this draft.
