Six-Pack for Saturday
The Mike Myers edition, or why you should make sure your kid throws lefthanded……..
-- Bronx relief pitcher Mike Myers has pitched for eight major league teams since 1995; he was 1990 4th round draft choice of the Giants out of Iowa State. He has never started major league baseball game, but he has earned in excess of $9M in his his career, that's million, with an M.
-- Myers has been traded straight up, in separate deals for both Buddy Groom and Curtis Leskanic. There's something to brag to the grandkids about.
-- His career record is 20-22, with 14 saves and a 4.22 ERA; in 770 career games, he has pitched only 467 innings, as he is used primarily vs lefty hitters in late game situations (against real good hitters, like Bonds, Ortiz, etc….).
-- Which is why this year's record (lefty hitters hitting .250 against him, righties .182) is pretty funny, but in fairness, they probably only let him face lousy righthanded hitters.
-- In 770 big league games, he has batted once, striking out for the Brewers in '99.
-- Arizona actually paid Myers $1.75M in 2003, which may explain why they lost 111 games in 2004.
So toss those rigthhanded gloves away and make your kid a southpaw. It may pay off someday.
