Suns scored 121 in Game 1 win, 98,88 in losses; they forced only 14 total turnovers in last two games, and got four points (2-8 on night from floor) from Jones, House, only two subs that played. Dallas forwards took 45 shots in Game 3 (19-45) as guards are keeping tempo slower, hurting Phoenix inside, which makes it lot harder for Suns to run. Bell is still out for Phoenix, and that isn't good. This is "better have" game for Suns.

        Six-Pack for Tuesday
-- Ricky Williams is a Toronto Argonaut; the Argos' QB is the 42-year old brother of Marcus Allen (Damon).
-- Allen played college football at Cal State-Fullerton- they then dropped football, a long time ago.
-- When exactly does Michael Barrett get suspended? Ten days later after punching Pierzynski, he is still playing?
-- Manny Ramirez has 50 homers against Toronto, the most of any player in Blue Jays' 30-year history.
-- In 41 career games at Wrigley Field, Adam Dunn has 36 runs batted in.
-- Home runs are up from 2.06 a game last year to 2.22 so far this year; my conspiracy theory is that ball is livelier, as to make sure home runs don't drop drastically in first year of increased drug testing. If h omers dropped drastically, the sport would have huge problem on its hands.

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...................
          13) Why do I think baseballs are livelier this year? Monday at Shea, Eric Byrnes hit a home run one-handed. We like Byrnes a lot, being an A's fan, but not for nothing, he ain't hitting the ball out of any big league park one-handed.

          12) Chicago Cubs are 6-21 in May. Not good, especially with the White Sox rolling along as world champs. Cubs lost their game Sunday when infield popup hit third baseman Ramirez in the head. Not his best moment.

          11) Weird how the guy who wound up ball from Bonds' 715th home run was at the concession stand at the time; who goes to the concessions with Bonds coming up? Hopefully, he will make a lot of money off it, anyway.

          10) Diamondbacks lost 111 games two years ago, then hired Bob Melvin as manager; they're 106-106 since then.

          9) Marlins lost last eight times Dontrelle Willis pitched.

          8) The guy who sang God Bless America in Detroit Monday looked a lot like former Iowa football coach Hayden Fry.

Some final thoughts after the two-day Gym Rat basketball tournament here in Albany.................
          7) If I taught a college business course, I'd have ny students study the Gym Rat tournament, the efficiency with which it is run, in a business that is notoriously inefficient and chaotic.

          6) Even at Gym Rat, though, there were some classic moments that are only found in spring/summer hoop.............
          a) One coach was talking on his cellphone during close game
          b) One mother was sitting under hoop, berating team her son played on for not playing good defense; one of the kids was arguing with her while the game was going on.
          c) One team was down 10 pts early in game; their 16-year old team walked up to court to watch, and coach put four of them in the game. Soon after, the team caught up.

          5) UConn women's coach Geno Auriemma coached his son's team; they made the playoffs, but lost to Westchester Hawks. Auriemma is tough on his kid during the game, but his son is good passer and excellent teammate.

          4) 15-year old game between City Rocks and team from Rhode Island turned ugly when one of officials, how shall we say, "was helping out the home side" a little too much. The guests objected at end of one-point loss, and their argument holds water since team's point guard is son of Rhode Island head coach Jim Baron, who was in the stands, and not happy.

          3) Amazing how close the three finals in the age groups were; all three games were in doubt with 1:00 to play, a testament to how well-organized this tournament is. Other than national tournament we attend in Orlando every year, nothing comes close to the Gym Rat, for convenience and organization.

          2) Total bill for the officials, for all three age groups? At $32 a game, how about $26,000?

          1) Team Odom won the 17-and-under title; their coach is the JV coach at Christ the King HS in Queens, Artie Cox, an old friend of Lamar Odom, who briefly went to CTK. When Cox was a kid, he appeared in old Oscar Meyer TV commercials that were famous for few years. He also used to pitch higharc softball against my cousin, KL Wheat, in Astoria. Small world

            Missed this yesterday .... Spark

Monday's List of 13: 13 kids who stood out at Gym Rat.......
The kids I've listed below aren't necessarily the best kids we saw this weekend; I don't see enough to make fair judgement on who the best guys are, but these 13 kids stood out, for a variety of reasons..........we'll have a final wrapup of Gym Rat in this space tomorrow..............there is no rhyme or reason to numbering of players below, just in order I wrote 'em down.
            13) Hakeem Townsend, Mt Pleasant Bulldogs, West Catholic HS, Philadelphia-- Explosive talent showed soft touch on mid-range jumpers and also ability to slash to basket. Too bad his team played most of their games at UAlbany-- we would have liked to see more of him.

            12) Brandon Witte, Syracuse Select, Baldwinsville-- Played at top of press; rangy, runs floor well at 6-5, needs to get little stronger, but he'll be a good college player.

            11) Ben Carpenter, Lehigh Valley Wildcats, Emmaus HS- Did lot of little things, hustled all over the floor, sprinted the court He stood out because he tried so hard. Players like that help you win, and coaches are always looking for those guys.

            10) Ryan Pearson, Team Odom, Christ the King-- If you're on team sponsored by Lamar Odom and you wear #7, Odom's number, that puts responsibility on you to help your team do well, and Pearson helped lead his team to the championship.

            9) John Cahill, Helderberg Hoopers, CBA-- He looks frail, but he is smart, can shoot it, and he gets his share of loose balls; chances are you've seen his dad on TV; he was one of refs in Florida-UCLA national title game.

            8) Tyrone Conley, Lone Wolf, Burlington, VT-- Had amazing dunk from standing start in one game, then took ton of shots in another game where his team needed him more inside. If he learns shot selection, could be a terrific player.

            7) Nick Pignone, New Hampshire Tribe, Pinkerton Academy-- Tough as nails kid, played on team of kids all from one high school, so they were overmatched, but Nick stood out for his hustle, his toughness. Needs to work on his right hand and shooting, but he has future at Division III level.

            6) Sean Smith, NJ Cyclones, St Anthony's-- Best shooter we saw this weekend, mostly from corners. At 6-6 and playing at St Anthony's, he's scholarship material.

            5) Robert Wright, Memorial Park, Orange HS-- Slasher was spectacular and acrobatic in brief time we saw him play, with a couple of highlight reel plays, getting to hoop in traffic and finishing plays. Has a very bright future.

            4) Jon Showers, York Stars, York Catholic-- Plays on team of perimeter guys who play lot like the Suns; this kid is Raja Bell guarding best player on other side, moving ball, not shooting a whole lot, but he can make a shot when called upon. Glue type player who helps make smallish Starsan impressive team.

            3) Marvin Billups, Westchester Hawks, Monroe-Woodbury-- Didn't get ball lot in brutal semi-final loss to the Jersey Shore Warriors (foul was called at 0:00 eith score tied), but Hawks had strong second halves all weekend, and Billups drives to hoop were usually right in middle of it. He drove baseline in one game from left corner, and dunked over two guys.

            2) Michael Cavataio, LI Lightning, St Francis Prep-- From the same high school as Vince Lombardi, this kid didn't shoot lot, but we never saw him miss. Seemed to be polished player, in control of his game, and good at the little things. Any player at 6-4 who shoots it like he can is a marketable player.

            1) Antone Gray, RI Breakers, St Raphael's HS-- Listed at 5-10, which is science fiction, but what a point guard. Supposedly has no D-I activity, which is shame, because he would own a league like America East. If he goes D-II, will be All American. Poster boy for how shorter kids get discriminated against. As they say, you can't measure heart. If you couldn't tell, he was our favorite player to watch this weekend.
