              Six-Pack for Sunday
-- After fifteen hours in Siena's gym Saturday, lot to report and we'll have it all Sunday night/Monday on this website.
-- Got home during 15th inning of Astro-Pirate game, weird game between two struggling teams.
-- Pirate manmager Tracy screwed up totally in top of 17th by not walking bases full and forcing Houston to score a run with pitcher pinch-hitting for Lidge. Taveras got single and Astros took the lead, until.........
-- Then Castillo homered in bottom of 17th to tie game and take his manager off the hook.
-- Game ended in 18th inning when winning run got to third base after awild pitch during intentional walk, then scored when the catcher dropped perfect throw from centerfield. A horrible loss for Houston team that can't win on the road.
-- These teams go at it again Sunday afternoon; lot of tired hitters, and two starters who better use up some innings

Sunday's List of 13: Quick Takes from Gym Rat Challenge
                13) Just got back from fifteen hours of hoops at Siena College and the Gym Rat Challenge, America's finest springtime event on the youth basketball circuit. 92 teams in 23 teams of four in the 17-and-under age group, which is where we focus..........

                12) This is like the Augusta National of spring tournaments, so well-run, almost always on time, hardly any chaos, just a pleasure to attend and as a result, the kids always act better in this event than most other tournaments. SEriously.

                11) We'll go through some players tomorrow that impressed us, but general consensus is that talent level is slightly down this year. Those things go in cycles, though; last year's level was very, very high.

                10) Even with seven games going on at all times for fifteen hours, the officiating was across-the-board, testament to how strong an area this is for basketball officials.

                9) The work involved with outting on an event like this is just stagerring to think about. Lot of logistics, workers to train- it all goes go smoothly, you take it for granted.

                8) But then, the rewards are great, too. $475 a team x 212 clubs in all three age groups is $100,700, before you charge an entry fee or sell a t-shirt or program. Referees, rent, insurance are all steep, as is paying for good help, but prfots here are huge.

Other quick hoop advice, before I hit the sack.......
                7) If you want to impress college coach, do what you're good at it. Don't hoist up 3's if you can't shoot. Please.

                6) Strengthen your weaknesses in between tournaments, and work on your game. It is the only real way to get better, then you can do more in tournaments, if you have more strengths..

                5) What impresses coaches? Rebounding, defending, being a good teammate, passing, shooting. Not dunking, not tossing wild passes out of bounds, not sulking. Figure this out.

                4) This tournament is like a Division III coaches' convention; if you coach DIII in New York/New England/New Jersey and you're not here, you don't work hard enough on recruiting.

                3) I wish I had bought stock in sneakers and cellphones.

                2) Tournaments like this, which pit teams from different parts of country against each other, are eye-openers, as far as how many good players there are in the country. It is hard to win a game in this tournament. Reality sets in, as far as chances of landing a college scholarship. In some ways, it can be sad.

                1) The bottom line is that college is for getting an education, even if you have to pay for it. DIII hoops is great fun, more fun than DI, just more expensive, less glamorous. As a great man once said, "The bigtime is where you are at the moment."

                  2006 Arena Football games
                  Playoffs, Second Round

Chicago (8-9) @ Colorado (11-5)-- Road warrior Rush on road for third week in row and seventh time in last nine weeks; they've already lost twice to Colorado, 65-56 here on Opening Day (+3.5), then 49-42 at home in Week 7 (+1.5). Chicago playing best ball of year, winning last three games, scoring average of 69.3 ppg, so they're live dog. Five of last seven Chicago games went over total. Champ Colorado was just 2-2 in last four games; they're 6-2 at home this season, and scored 55+ points in six of last seven games.

Philadelphia (10-7) @ Orlando (10-6)-- Bon Jovi's Soul on road for third week in row; they won last three games, holding foes to just 41.7 ppg. Philly lost 47-33 on this field in Week 3 (+1.5); they're 4-1 in their last five road games. Orlando held arch-rival Tampa to 13 points in Week 13, then their defense went on break, allowing 75-42-67 pts in last three games, losing two of three, so will be interesting to see if they can pick it up here vs hot visitor. Predators are 1-6 if they allow more than 42 points, 9-0 if they don't. nnn
