Detroit dominated most of Game 2, but Miami got to within 90-88 with :09.2 left, but had to score 17 points in 1:46 to do it-- they had 56 points after three quarters and are getting nothing from Haslem (1-12 from field in the series so far). With series tied 1-1, they now go to Florida, where Miami is 5-1 in playoffs, but just 2-3-1 vs spread. Pistons lost two of three at Cleveland last series scoring 77-72-84 points away from home. Underdog is 4-0 vs the spread in this round so far, with dog winning twice SU.

Anaheim avoided sweep by beating Oilers 6-3 Thursday, ending 13-game losing skid at Edmonton; now they come home, where they were held to one goal in each of first two series games. In Game 4, Anaheim had 46-23 edge in shots, and scored six goals despite 1-8 showing on power play (2-28 in series). Five of last six Edmonton road games stayed under total. Oilers had winning streak snapped at five; can they slam door shut on the road?

        Playoffs, Second Round
The four home teams this week didn't play last week; of the four visiting teams this week, all of whom played last week, only Arizona played at home, so we have much-lower seeded teams venturing out on the road again to try and advance to the AFL semi-finals next week.

Georgia (9-8) @ Dallas (13-3)-Desperadoes went to Georgia in Week 13 and beat the Force 62-59 (+1.5), one of five Georgia losses by three or less points. Dallas won six of their last seven games (5-2 vs spread) and covered three of last four home games. Over is 3-0-1 in their last four contests. Dallas scored 49-51-48 points in their losses; they're 11-0 when they score more than 51. Georgia lost four of five to close regular season, but won on Long Island last week, their fifth win in last eight road games. Four of their last six foes scored 57+ points.

Arizona (9-8) @ San Jose (10-6)-- Rattlers lost twice to San Jose this year, 58-50 at home in Week 3 (+4.5; Rattlers were 0-3 at that point), 61-49 on this field in Week 10 (+4.5). Over is 3-1-1 in last five Arizona games. Rattlers are 2-6 on road, losing last three away games by 3,8,24 points. SaberCats won their last seven games (five by 9+ points), and covered seven of last eight; they started season 1-4 (with only win vs 0-3 Arizona), but now have won six in row at home (covering four of last five there).

Chicago (8-9) @ Colorado (11-5)-- Road warrior Rush on road for third week in row and seventh time in last nine weeks; they've already lost twice to Colorado, 65-56 here on Opening Day (+3.5), then 49-42 at home in Week 7 (+1.5). Chicago playing best ball of year, winning last three games, scoring average of 69.3 ppg, so they're live dog. Five of last seven Chicago games went over total. Champ Colorado was just 2-2 in last four games; they're 6-2 at home this season, and scored 55+ points in six of last seven games.

Philadelphia (10-7) @ Orlando (10-6)-- Bon Jovi's Soul on road for third week in row; they won last three games, holding foes to just 41.7 ppg. Philly lost 47-33 on this field in Week 3 (+1.5); they're 4-1 in their last five road games. Orlando held arch-rival Tampa to 13 points in Week 13, then their defense went on break, allowing 75-42-67 pts in last three games, losing two of three, so will be interesting to see if they can pick it up here vs hot visitor. Predators are 1-6 if they allow more than 42 points, 9-0 if they don't. nnn

          Six-Pack for Saturday
-- First piece of bad news for Tigers in while; Mike Maroth goes on DL. How much pitching depth does Detroit have?
-- Local minor league team is having bobblehead night for the politician who had their ballpark built-- park is not only named after him, he gets own bobblehead. What a country.
-- Bad news for Suns is that Raja Bell probably won't be in rest of Dallas series. If you've ever had calf injury, they are incredibly painful and slow to heal.
-- Padres hammered St Louis, are now 19-3 in their last 22 May home games. San Diego is very streaky ballclub.
-- Vladimir Guerrero hit inside-the-park homer down line in rightfield to help Angels win 5-2 Friday night, first one for Angels since Darin Erstad did hit one at Toronto in 1997.
-- Nice of Jack Nicklaus to suggest that Tiger Woods would return to action at the Memorial, Nicklaus' tournament, but Woods isn't going to. At least Nicklaus wasn't self-serving.

Saturday's List of 13: Looking at obscure NFL statistics
            13) If Art Shell does nothing else as Oakland's new coach, he has to reduce Raider penalties, as Silver and Black led NFL in penalties last three years, getting flagged 134-134-147 times, average of 8.65 per game.

            12) Last two years, Denver, best team in Raiders' division, has finished 30th, 29th in NFL in penalties, so right away, on the average, Raiders spot Denver sixteen yards a game, big edge.

            11) Will be interesting to see if Herman Edwards leaves' Chief offense alone; in last three years, KC ranked 18-1-3 in number of plays run from scrimmage. During that same time, Edwards' Jet squad finished 30-16-31 in plays run, and was dependent on creating turnovers to win games.

            10) The NFL game is over-officiated, and now we can back it up with numbers; in 2003, seven teams had 1,000+ yards in penalties; in '04, six had 1,000+. Last year, twelve teams had 1,000+ penalty yards, five had 1,115+-- too many flags thrown

            9) Four teams averaged 6+ yards per play in '04 (Colts-Chiefs- Packers-Vikings). Last year, three teams led league with 5.8 yards per play (Colts-Chiefs-Seahawks).

            8) Part of reason Seattle was so upset with officiating in the Super Bowl is, over last three years, Seahawks finished 28-32 and 30 in number of penalties called- they're well-coached in that area, so they knew they were getting hosed.

            7) Minnesota averaged 6.0/6.4 yards per play in last couple of years with Moss at WR; last year, they averaged 4.9 ypp and are now starting over, with new coach, new QB.

            6) Not that Moss helped any in Oakland; Raiders averaged 5.5 yards per play in '04, 5.0 last year, as more heads rolled after another dismal Oakland season.

            5) Over last three years, Giants are just 12-49 (.245) when they go for it on fourth down. League average during that time is a lot higher, 46.6%, so not sure why Giants have been so poor, other than their short yardage running game is pretty bad.

            4) AFC South members Tennessee (72), Jacksonville (64) lead NFL in going for it on fourth down over last three seasons. Eagles, at 6-23 over three-year period, are last in attempts.

            3) Sean Payton has his work cut out in New Orleans, where Saints' 49 lost fumbles in last three years leads NFL. Saints, in last two years, finished 2nd, 5th in number of penalties, so it is important they stop playing sloppy football. Last year was understandable, but it had been trend before that.

            2) Miami (99), Chicago, Dallas (92 each) have fumbled the ball more than any other team in last three seasons.

            1) Not sure what Cleveland is up to, with young Frye at QB, and no backup of note behind him; over last three years, the Browns ranked 28-32-28 in plays run, so they need a passer skilled in moving chains, and a running game. Doesn't look like those pieces are in place yet.
