Nowitzki was 8-18 in Game 1, yet Dallas still led by seven with a little under 2:30 left but coughed game away; unless Mavericks commit to hurting Suns inside and slowing pace of game under 110-120 point mark, they will lose, even with Bell hurt, because House can fill in if game is fast-paced. Howard also hurt for the Mavericks, who need this game to avoid going to desert down 0-2. Terry was 6-17 in Game 1; Suns were only 5-15 from arc-- if they ever get hot from there, Dallas could really be in trouble. Would expect Dallas' best effort in this game.

Buffalo played eight straight one-goal games (6-2); they're 5-14 on power play in their two wins, 0-3 in loss, so important for the visitors to stay at full strength, where both sides have scored six goals so far in series. Hurricanes scored goal in eight of nine periods so far, but more than one goal in only one- they won 37 of 62 faceoffs in Game 3, but giving up three goals in the second period killed them. All three games been 1-1 after first period

Friday's List of 13: Random facts, thoughts ideas...........
        13) Capper Zeke checked in to inform us that 2000 was the last time Belmont Stakes didn't have the winner of either of first two winners of racing's Triple Crown. It won't this year.

        12) Greg Maddux was 4-0, 1.35 in April, is 0-4, 8.44 in May.

        11) CC Sabathia threw consecutive complete game wins, with 102 pitches thrown in each game. His RA is 1.15 since coming off the DL after getting hurt Opening Night.

        10) AL starting pitchers were 7-33 (.212) at plate last week, in interleague play. Red Sox pitchers had three of seven hits.

        9) Devil Rays have until May 31 to inform major league gurus on whether they will change nickname for next season. They are considering color change, name change, lot of changes.

        8) High school football coaches in Connecticut can now get a suspension, if they win a game by more than 50 points, as a rule was passed calling 50+-point routs unsportsmanlike acts.

        7) If you played every lefty starter that opposed a righty on Wednesday, you would have made $410, playing $100/game. For whatever reason, southpaws been killing righties this yr.

        6) Reggie Bush will wear #25 for the Saints, as NFL stupidly stuck to its guns regarding numbering rules. Too many rules, not enough quirkiness. Score one for the Neanderthals.

        5) You can't wear 0 or 00 anymore either, for whatever reason. What in the name of Jim Otto is going on here?

        4) The A's are officially a mess, with five pitchers on DL, and closer Huston Street having terrible season. Rich Harden is a talented pitcher, but if he's going to be hurt all the time, he is pretty much useless.

        3) Royals scored six runs in bottom of first inning Thursday, still lost by five runs; if they lose less than 110 games, it will be very surprising. Their series in Bronx this weekend should be some excitingly competitive baseball.

        2) Bet Steve Trachsel was thrilled when he got scratched from Sunday start vs Florida, so Orlando Hernandez can make his debut in Met colors vs Marlins, worst team in NL. Trachsel instead gets a home start against 1st place Arizona Monday.

        1) Was happy to see Herb Sendek throw out first ball at the Pirate-Diamondback game Wednesday (Sendek is from the western PA area). Almost didn't recognize him, since I hadn't seen him smile before, and he was smiling a lot Wednesday.

He may be sitting on gold mine in desert, with rival Arizona in decline and basketball program that is starved for a winner.
