Dallas, Phoenix both extended to seven games; Suns had extra day of rest before their Game 7; would guess Mavs will throw a bunch of bodies at Nash again, hoping to wear him down as the series progresses. Former Maverick really had five poor games stat-wise in Clipper series, but was awesome when it counted, in Game 7. In previous years, before Johnson was Dallas coach, it wouldbe free-wheeling, track meet-type series, but now Dallas is team that can defend, while Suns will try to outscore them. Suns are just 8-6 in playoffs, but they're still playing-- this will be first series they don't own the home court, though.

Carolina dominated Game 2, outshooting Sabres 35-19, winning faceoffs 44-28, but three power play goals kept Sabres from big loss- they didn't have even-strength goal in game. Now series is off to Buffalo, where Sabres are 4-1 so far in playoffs. Carolina is 4-1 on road in playoffs, with all four wins by single goal, and the only loss when they had 3-0 lead in series vs Devils. This looks like a long series; Edmonton looks like they're clinching early, so advantage Oilers if they get extra rest before finals.

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...............
        13) I foolishly assumed that because the Knicks were so pathetic this year, that they would at least benefit by way of a lottery pick, but I forgot they traded the pick to the Bulls for Eddy Curry, in a trade where they also gave up Tim Thomas, who has become a huge cog in the Suns' playoff run. Knicks are the worst-run franchise in the four team sports, and that is saying something.

        12) Former Celtic great Bill Russell played in ten Game 7's in his career, and his team won all ten games.

        11) New Orleans Saints have sold 59% of their luxury boxes for 2006, and a franchise-record 55,000 season tickets, as the region aims to show it can still support the Saints. Football is so big in the south, would be big blow to region's morale if the Saints skip town.

        10) Cubs starting pitchers have failed to finish fifth inning fourteen times already this season; opposing starters have failed to throw five innings only twice.

        9) Last summer, 23 of 32 NFL first round draft choices missed at least a day of their training camp, due to holdouts.

        8) Since 1990, only three teams that had best chance to get first round pick in NBA Draft actually got it.

        7) For a mere $750, you can own your radar gun; then you can go to Little League and chart pitches, or sit by a highway and target potential speeders. Fun for the whole family.

        6) Michael Barrett sucker-punched AJ Pierzynski Saturday and still hasn't been suspended; if this was the NBA, he would have served the suspension already, and would be back playing.

        5) Why don't pitchers wear really big gloves, like outfielders do? It would help them catch balls hit back at them, and might be more effective in hiding the ball from batter's sight.

        4) If you like to invest in baseball totals, note that the over is 36-26 in games where one or both starting pitchers faced this opponent in one of his most recent two starts. We are tracking this stat on a daily basis on the baseball page, beginning today.

        3) Major League Baseball may try to start miking umps soon, in an NFL Films-type attempt to bring the game closer to fans. Sounds like a good idea, so they'll probably never get around to actually doing it.

        2) If you like horse racing, Saturdays at noon on TVG, is an excellent, pre-game-type show that sets the stage for entire day in thoroughbred racing. They're really trying to do a good job with it, so it is worth watching.

        1) Ryan Madson of Phillies threw 105 pitches in relief in a 9-8, 16-inning loss to Mets Tuesday; he blanked New York for the first seven innings, before giving up game-winning homer to Beltran. When was last time a reliever threw 100+ pitches?
